In Sauvo, different aspects of local history come into view side by side: the medieval church and the local history museum in the centre. Further afield in the municipality, you’ll also find church architecture and routes through the landscape. You can shape your stay around whether you mainly want to discover culture or also explore trails on foot, by bike or on the water.

A medieval church with a history

Sauvo Church was consecrated in 1472 and is dedicated to Saint Clement of Rome, the patron saint of seafarers. It is one of Finland’s largest medieval parish churches. Inside, features from different periods come together: the furnishings span from the 13th century to the present day. At the same time, the church’s interior has largely retained its appearance from the 17th century. This span of time makes the church a special stop for anyone who wants to look at historic buildings not only in terms of their age, but also how they have changed. The church is wheelchair accessible; check this information again before your trip.

Local history in the centre

The Sauvo Local History Museum is located in the centre at Vahtistentie 3. Each summer, it holds a themed exhibition on local history; the annual themes may vary. The main building has exhibition rooms, a museum shop, toilets and a café kitchen. If the museum is an important part of your itinerary, check the current exhibition theme and visiting hours in advance. This will help you tailor your visit to your interest in the municipality’s history.

The Karuna Church, elsewhere in the municipality of Sauvo, offers a different cultural perspective. Architect Josef Stenbäck designed the church in grey granite in the National Romantic style; it was built between 1908 and 1910. It is part of a nationally valuable cultural landscape and is protected under the regional plan. The municipality therefore offers two very different historical impressions side by side: the medieval parish church and a building from the early 20th century.

Gardens and routes around the municipality

Kaninkolon kukkapuisto is a one-hectare private garden that is open to the public. As visiting arrangements may change, check the current details before your visit. The garden adds a different kind of destination to the churches and local history museum: the focus here is a landscaped garden rather than architectural history and collections.

For active days, the Tammireitistö offers an extensive network of routes. It comprises around 500 kilometres of cycling, hiking and paddling routes through the areas of Kaarina, Paimio, Lieto and Sauvo, as well as connecting routes between the municipalities. Not all routes are in the centre of Sauvo; the network is a guide to excursions in the wider municipality and beyond. One specific destination is Pirunpellonpolku, which is part of the Tammireitistö. The signposted trail passes a large boulder field and continues to Paratiisimäki. From there, you can enjoy a wide view over Maalunlahti. The options are quite different: the historic church and museum offer cultural experiences, while Pirunpellonpolku combines a trail with a striking natural feature.

Getting there and finding a suitable holiday apartment

Sauvo can be reached via the expressway or the old Turuntie; from there, the route continues south on Road 181. According to the municipal tourism information, Sauvo is about a half-hour drive from Turku and an hour and a half from Helsinki. These times are approximate and may vary depending on the route and conditions.

When choosing a holiday apartment, it helps to consider the destinations you have planned: the local history museum is in the centre, while Pirunpellonpolku and the Tammireitistö offer destinations elsewhere in the municipality. This lets you decide whether your stay will focus more on Sauvo’s cultural attractions or on the municipality’s routes.
