Mynämäki offers different ways to explore cultural history and nature: the Mynämäen museo tells the story of the municipality, while trails, churches and birdwatching sites offer a variety of excursions. When planning your holiday, it’s worth deciding first whether you’d prefer to focus on collections and historic buildings or spend your days outdoors.

Museums, Churches and History

The Mynämäen museo in Mynämäki presents the history of the municipality through exhibitions and collections. Its permanent exhibitions include the Pappilan sali, which focuses on the vicarage during the time of vicar Wilho Sipilä, and the Rönberg-Rönnevaara Hall, which explores the history of the local Mynämäki Lotta Svärd association. Visitors can discover both life in the vicarage and the story of a local association.

In the municipal area, the Karjalan kotiseutumuseo tells the story of the former municipality of Karjala (Tl.), its residents and their livelihoods. One exhibition area presents the Stone Age settlement site of Aisti; the upper floor hosts changing exhibitions. The Karjalan kirkko is also a place of interest for those interested in history and architecture: the Neo-Gothic wooden long church was designed by G. Th. Chiewitz and completed in 1869. Its organ, built by K. G. Wikström, dates from 1894.

The Laajoen kylämuseo, also known as Vihtorin tupa, is temporarily closed. The building was once the home of village blacksmith Vihtori Ylen. Another museum exhibition is located on the upper floor of the Sunila barn, where visitors can discover products designed and made in Lauri Junnila’s workshop.

A guided historical tour explores the area around Pyhän Laurin kirkko and also shows what the centre of Mynämäki looked like at the beginning of the 20th century. Check the tour’s availability before your trip. On the Pyhän Henrikin tie hiking trail in Mynämäki, Nunnankukkula, Portassuo, Kirkkokallio and Munkkeinlevo are marked destinations.

Nature Trails and Excursions in the Municipality

Mietoistenlahti combines a vast area with reed-lined shores and seasonal birdwatching: during the spring migration, numerous waterbirds and waders can be seen there. The Mietoistenlahden lintuvesialue is a nationally significant natural area. The area has two birdwatching towers, Vasikkahaan torni and Perhetorni, as well as the accessible Silakkari birdwatching platform. The trails and towers of Mietoistenlahden lintupolut offer opportunities for day trips.

The Kulttuuripolku also combines a walk with changing outdoor exhibitions. This approximately half-kilometre-long recreational trail runs between Saaren kartano, the Mietoistenlahti nature reserve and the shore meadow. It features changing works by artists working at Saaren kartano; the exhibition is open to anyone walking in the area.

The stated distances and trail types can help you compare routes: the Asemanseudun luontopolku is 6 kilometres long in total, with a shorter option of about 2 kilometres. The trail is well marked and signposted. Mynämäki’s cycling routes are easy to ride, about 6 to 14 kilometres long and suitable for day trips. The Kuhankuono trail network includes several circular routes, including trails in the Mynämäki area; it is suitable for hiking, cross-country skiing, leisurely strolls, and mushroom and berry picking.

The Marekivi offers a different perspective on the landscape: an approximately 1.25-billion-year-old olivine diabase from Satakunta, eroded by water and humic acids. Together, these attractions offer different kinds of excursions, from spring migration birdwatching to hiking and cycling routes, churches and museum collections.
