Keuruu: Cultural History and Experiences on the Water
Accommodation in Keuruu
Keuruu combines cultural and historical discoveries with experiences on the water. Vanha Keuruu, the rectory complex on the shore of Lake Keurusselkä, tells the story of the area; a canoe route runs around the town centre, and in summer, trails in Keurusselkä Sports Park invite you to get active. This gives you a mix of culture, nature and activities on the water to consider when planning your holiday. Which of these aspects interests you most may also play a part in choosing your holiday apartment in Keuruu.
Rectory history and distinctive buildings
Vanha Keuruu is a rectory complex dating from the 19th century, significant for its cultural history and landscape, on the shore of Lake Keurusselkä. You can explore the area on foot. Its buildings include Kamana, a restored stone barn belonging to the old rectory, built in 1903. Here, you can encounter different reminders of the complex’s history, from the rectory building to the barn.
Keuruu’s old church also offers a glimpse into the history of the parish: it was inaugurated in 1758 as the parish’s third church. Its decorative paintings were completed later, between 1782 and 1785. If you are interested in churches and historic interiors, this offers a tangible connection to Keuruu’s past.
The Punnonen House offers a different perspective. Visitors can experience the atmosphere of an officials’ residence that has been preserved almost in its original condition; the Keuruu Artists’ Association also holds an exhibition there. At Keuruu railway station, architectural history and collecting culture come together: the building was constructed in the late 19th century to a design by architect Bruno Granholm. The “Keräilyn Kätköistä” exhibition features, among other things, an extensive collection of Finnish enamelware, old toys and retail goods. Groups and individuals are welcome at the station and exhibition by prior appointment.
On the water and along the shore
A sheltered canoe route of about 10 kilometres runs around the centre of Keuruu. The circuit of Kirkkosaari along this route is about 10 kilometres and takes approximately two to four hours. The approximate duration and route length give you a guide for planning your day, but do not indicate a more precise walking or paddling time.
You can rent canoes, single and double kayaks, and a large canoe for about twelve people for the canoe routes; guided tours are also available. This gives you a choice of different types of boats, including an option for a larger group. If you would rather take a trip by boat, you can board the paddle steamer Elias Lönnrot: it operates scheduled services between Keuruu’s centrally located harbour and Keurusselkä Resort, as well as round trips that return to the starting point.
The Maria Raunio Trail leads to the cultural harbour on the shore by the library. In summer, Keurusselkä Sports Park offers trails for running, walking, Nordic walking and cycling. For an active day, you can choose between paddling, a boat trip and activities on the trails.
More things to do and useful information
Kurkisaari Family Park has a walking trail with boardwalks and two campfire sites. Firewood is not provided. The park also has a sandy beach and three boat moorings. These amenities make the park another option for combining time by the water with a walk; if you plan to use a campfire site, note that no firewood is available.
Keuruu Tourist Information provides information about local attractions, accommodation and events. It also lends bicycles, rowing boats and other sports equipment. This may help you decide between a cycling trip, a rowing-boat outing or other activities while you are there.
