In Äänekoski, different ideas for a stay sit side by side: changing art exhibitions, guided visits to Pro Nemus, winter activities at Äänemäki and routes around the lakes. You can tailor your stay to culture, exercise or time by the water, and when choosing a holiday apartment, consider which experiences interest you most.

Art and visits to Pro Nemus

The Äänekoski Art Museum is located in Hammarén House. The building was completed in 1900 as the factory manager’s residence; today, the museum hosts changing exhibitions throughout the year. The exhibition programme is based on the collection of the Toivo Parantainen Art Museum Foundation. Art enthusiasts will therefore find a different kind of destination here than among the activities in the lake district or at the ski centre.

The city organises monthly guided public visits to the Pro Nemus visitor centre. The visit is free, but does not include a factory tour. Visitors must be at least seven years old. Individuals and groups of fewer than 30 people can register for a public visit using a registration form. Dates and availability, as well as the conditions for visits, may change, so check them before planning your trip.

Winter activities and paddling

Äänemäki Ski Centre has three illuminated slopes, a snow park and a mini snow park. You can also rent skis, snowboards and snowshoes there. These facilities make Äänemäki a distinct option for winter activities. Operations are seasonal, and the availability of the facilities and rentals may change. If you would like to focus your stay on skiing or snowshoeing, check the current options for your travel dates.

On the water, the Myllyselkä paddling route offers a different way to experience the Keitele lake district. The 12-kilometre day trip is intended for independent paddling and is described as accessible and suitable for beginners. Its length and day-trip format can help with planning if you would like to include a longer activity on the water. A day built around this kind of activity differs considerably from a visit to the art museum or a stay at the beach.

Around Äänejärvi and Tärttävuori

The Äänejärvi loop is a three-kilometre walking and cycling route around the lake. A bridge and views towards Äänekosken Satama provide additional landmarks along the way. Äänejärvi Beach has a swimming pier and changing cabins. For winter use, there is a heated swimming cabin; the beach also has an ice-swimming spot. Beach facilities are seasonal, and their availability may change.

Nearby, Tärttävuori is a destination offering views of Tärttälähti Bay on Lake Kuhnamo and as far as the city of Äänekoski. The viewpoint is nearby; the summit is about seven kilometres from the city centre. The forest trail passes through varied terrain, offers scenic views and has a birdwatching tower along the route. It is not easy to walk throughout, and extra care is needed in wet conditions. This makes the trail different from the clearly defined Äänejärvi loop.

When choosing a holiday apartment, it is worth deciding first what you want to focus on: art and guided visits, winter activities, a paddling trip, or routes by the water and through the forest. The destinations and activities mentioned have different conditions and formats. Check seasonal offerings and visit dates for your travel period before planning your days.
