Hamina tells the story of its history as a fortress town not only in museums: a four-kilometre trail runs along the fortress ramparts, while nature paths, markets and changing museum exhibitions reveal other sides of the town. This gives you a clear question to consider when planning your trip: would you like to focus on the fortress and local history, or should nature and cycling also play an important role?

Discover the fortress town on foot

The Fortress Trail starts at Hamina’s Flag Tower, loops around the town centre along the fortress ramparts and ends at the Town Hall Square in the centre of Hamina Fortress. Its four kilometres connect a set starting point and endpoint with a route around the town centre. You can therefore include it in your day’s plans as a continuous way to explore Hamina’s fortress complex. There are seven information boards along the trail. The route and its stops give the walk a clear historical focus, without requiring you to rely on a museum exhibition as your only way to explore the fortress’s history.

The old town centre also offers a distinctive way to find your bearings: its sights are close together along the ring-shaped streets. The Town Hall dates from 1798 and stands in the centre of Kahdeksan sädäkatu. If you are interested in architectural history and the townscape, you can include it alongside the Fortress Trail as another point of reference for exploring Hamina.

Museums offering different perspectives

The Hamina City Museum focuses on the history of the fortress town, its important role in regional history, and significant events and personalities. It also hosts changing special exhibitions on different aspects of Hamina’s cultural heritage. You can therefore tailor your visit to the town’s history as a whole or, depending on the current exhibition, to particular topics.

The RUK Museum in the centre of Hamina follows a different historical thread. Its permanent exhibition covers the history of the Reserve Officer School from the pre-war period through the armistice and reconstruction to the present day. It also presents Hamina as Finland’s oldest garrison town. Together with the city museum, it offers a contrast between the history of the town and that of a particular institution.

The Shopkeeper's Museum presents the Finnish-Russian merchant tradition of the early 20th century and the former everyday lives of the artisans who once lived in these premises. It is housed in a wooden building completed in 1841. If you are interested in trade, crafts and everyday history, you will find a distinct focus here alongside the themes of the fortress and garrison.

Bay, nature trails and cycling route

Pappilansaari-Lupinlahti is a broad, shallow bay and also a valuable wetland. Front Island is part of the Pappilansaari-Lupinlahti Natura 2000 area and is also designated as the separate Pappilansaari Nature Reserve. A nature trail of about 700 metres runs through the central part of Front Island and along its southern shore. These details give nature lovers a specific place to visit and an approximate trail length to consider when planning their trip.

Hamina also has nature trails stretching from the town centre to the edge of the forest. The town maintains the Kirkkojärvi and Lupinlahti birdwatching towers. If you would like to include nature alongside the fortress and museums, you can consider these places as interests in their own right during your stay, without making the whole visit revolve around a single focus.

For a cycling trip, the Hamina cycling route is another option: it is 16 kilometres long and starts and ends in Hamina town centre. Returning to the same starting point makes it different to plan than the Fortress Trail, which ends at Town Hall Square. This gives you the option to weigh up cycling, local history and nature trails when deciding which activities you would like to shape your stay.

Markets and choosing where to stay

Five major markets are held in Hamina every year. Together with the museums, fortress trail and nature destinations, they offer something for a range of interests: local and regional history, merchant traditions, nature and outdoor activities. If you are especially keen to explore the fortress town and its museums, consider Hamina as a destination when looking for a holiday rental. Nature trails and the cycling route add more activities to choose from, depending on your interests.
