Iitti sparks curiosity with a 17th-century church, a local history museum housed in historic granaries and canoe routes through the countryside. The wider municipality also has cultural sites and natural attractions. When planning your holiday, you can decide whether village history, waterways or excursions into nature should take centre stage.

Church and cultural landscape in the church village

Iitti Church was built in 1693 at a crossroads of land and water routes. Its cruciform design was influenced by Katarina Church in Stockholm, which was completed in the early 1690s. The church village’s recognition as a cultural landscape also has a clear date: Maatiainen ry selected it in 2020. The history of the architecture and the cultural landscape that has developed over time are among the distinctive features of a stay in Iitti.

If you would like to see the inside of the church, please note the visiting arrangements: on weekdays, its doors can be opened at the request of cemetery staff. Check before your visit whether it will be possible to go inside.

Local history museum in historic granaries

Iitti’s local history museum is housed in a former granary dating from 1830. The museum hill also includes a granary gallery from the 1750s and a threshing barn. The permanent exhibition focuses mainly on farming-related items, agricultural tools, household appliances and furnishings from around the turn of the 20th century. Together, the historic buildings and the exhibition offer different insights into rural life, from the architectural history of the granaries to the work and household items of a later era.

Canoe routes and trails around the municipality

The 69.1-kilometre Iitti–Vuolenkoski canoe route starts in the church village. It follows the straits around Hiidensaari to the Kimola Canal and continues to Vuolenkoski. Its length makes it a different option to plan for than the canoe route on Lake Urajärvi: that route is listed as 11.2 kilometres, but its length can be adjusted to suit individual preferences. This makes it suitable for inexperienced paddlers, too. Conditions on both canoe routes can vary by season, so check them before setting out.

There are also a variety of options on land. The signposted Radansuu nature trail lies next to the church village, circles the old village of Radansuu and is about eight kilometres long. The municipality of Iitti also has around 200 kilometres of cycling routes through rural landscapes for different fitness levels, including bike rides suitable for families. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, it may help to decide first whether you would rather spend your days exploring the church village’s culture, going on a cycling or hiking trip, or out on the water.

Hiidensaari: ridge, forest protection and harbour

In the wider municipality, Hiidenvuori on Hiidensaari rises 60 metres above the water level of the Kymijoki River and defines the landscape. From the car park, you can walk to the summit along trails; the final section has solid steps. The eastern part of Hiidensaari is a nature reserve and a nationally valuable protected area for broadleaf forests. The island’s trails are suitable for hiking and mountain biking, and Hiidensaari can also be reached by boat or canoe.

The excursion harbour on Hiidensaari has a fire-safe shelter and composting toilets, and can also accommodate somewhat larger boats. As facilities may be maintained or altered, check their current condition before your trip. The combination of trails, protected forest and harbour offers a different focus from the cultural sites in the church village.

More cultural and natural attractions in Iitti

In southern Iitti, in Koliseva, the Karrala local history museum is set on a farmstead dating from the 18th century. In the village of Lyöttilä, combat and communication trenches, firing positions and unfinished shelters extend for more than two kilometres. These places add farming-related architectural history and military heritage to the region’s story.

In northern Iitti, the historic landscape of Haukkaselkä is home to valuable nature and three Stone Age rock paintings. On Talasvuori in Mankala, near Iitti, a statue looks out over the Kettujärvi landscape. Together with Hiidensaari, these places reveal different aspects of the landscape: protected broadleaf forests, rock paintings and a viewpoint with a statue.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Iitti, it is worth considering these differences: are you mainly interested in visiting the church and local history museum, or are you drawn to natural attractions and activities in different parts of the municipality? The places described here range from the church village to other villages and landscapes. Focus your search on what best suits your travel plans.
