Iskmo: Glassworks history and trails
Accommodation in Iskmo
Iskmo brings together the history of the Grönvik glassworks with specific trails, cross-country ski tracks and a written ghost story at the beach. Culture and outdoor activities go hand in hand, so you don’t have to limit your trip to a single theme. When planning a holiday apartment stay, the key question is which of these experiences you want to shape your visit: local history, a named trail or winter cross-country skiing.
Glassworks history and surviving buildings
The Grönvik glassworks was founded in 1812 beside the harbour in the village of Iskmo in Korsholm. By the end of the 19th century, it was the largest manufacturer of window glass. The harbour location and the product make the industrial connection tangible: window glass is a specific product that brings the history of this glassworks to life. Visitors who enjoy learning about the history of an industry at a destination will find a different way in here than through trails and leisure activities.
One two-storey, stately building from the glassworks remains. It may date from the 18th century, a period before the glassworks was founded in 1812. The building’s possible date and the founding year of the glassworks are two different dates: the building may be older than the business. The building also includes a park and a gardener’s residence. Alongside the industrial story, there is therefore a clearly identified architectural ensemble.
Circular trails, hiking route and cross-country skiing
The Hyvinvointipolku wellness trail starts at the Hallonnäs car park and consists of two circular sections: Hallonnäs–Kråknäs and the Hallonnäs loop. The Iskmo-Jungsund hiking route starts either at the sports ground in Jungsund or at the Hallonnäs car park. Hallonnäs is therefore a shared starting point, while Jungsund is listed as an additional option only for the hiking route. This makes it easy to compare the routes: the wellness trail has two named circular sections; for Iskmo-Jungsund, you can choose between two starting points.
There are also dedicated cross-country ski tracks. They start at the kindergarten at Iskmontie 24 and are 1, 1.4 and 3.8 kilometres long. Their lengths can be compared directly: the shortest and longest tracks differ by 2.8 kilometres, with the 1.4-kilometre track in between. If cross-country skiing is part of your holiday, you can choose a route based on its length.
A story at the beach
At Grönvik beach in Iskmo, at Alskatintie 1015, there is a sign with a written ghost story. This small cultural feature differs both from the industrial history of the glassworks and from the named trails: here, the focus is on a story at the beach. The sign may not always be available; if you specifically want to see this story, check in advance whether it is there.
Plan your stay around your interests
When looking for a holiday apartment in Iskmo, you can use these experiences as a guide. If you are mainly interested in local history, the glassworks and surviving building are the highlights; for an active stay, you can choose from the circular sections, the hiking route or, in winter, the ski track. The distinctions between the circular sections, the two hiking-route starting points and the three ski-track lengths give you specific points of comparison when planning your days.
