The Mustijoki River gives Pornainen its distinctive character: it flows through the centre, offers a canoe route and is classified as a waterway for migratory fish. There are also rapids, nature trails and places of cultural and historical interest. Whether you’re looking for water, outdoor activities or historical discoveries during your stay, Pornainen offers a range of ways to shape your trip.

River Landscapes and Canoeing

The canoe route along the Mustijoki runs through Pornainen and is about 65 kilometres long in total. There are day stages of varying lengths along the way, so you can plan the route around your preferred length of day. More than 20 rapids lie along the route. About seven of them are navigable by experienced paddlers. This distinction is important when choosing the right river experience: the tour includes both sections with rapids and stages that can be planned as day trips.

The Mustijoki Rapids Tour includes nine rapids in Pornainen. Lahankoski shows the power of the river in particularly striking numbers: over a distance of about 200 metres, the Mustijoki drops by more than ten metres in total. Each rapid on the tour offers opportunities for photo stops and experiences all year round, from impressive Halkiankoski to idyllic Itälänkoski. Those interested in the river landscape can enjoy different perspectives on the Mustijoki, from the course of the canoe route to individual rapids.

Nature Trails and Active Time Outdoors

The Kotojärvi recreation area brings together a range of options for exercise and relaxation. These include a fitness trail, fitness stairs, outdoor fitness equipment and a network of paths. An accessible nature trail offers another way to explore the area. Facilities also include a shelter, two toilets, a bathing beach, a children’s playground, a beach volleyball court and a mountain biking trail. This variety makes Kotojärvi appealing for different kinds of day out, from relaxing at the beach to exercising on the paths or fitness equipment.

A nature trail starts beside the bridge at the rapids in Laha and runs downstream. At Karjakoski, a wide outdoor trail leads to the destination, and there is a small fire pit by the riverbank. The Hyötinmäki mountain biking trails offer options for different skill levels. If you prefer a clearly defined sporting activity, you’ll find a beginner-friendly, nine-hole disc golf course with two layouts near the church village.

Church and Cultural History

A granite church completed in 1924 stands in Kirveskoski. It was designed by Ilmari Launis. Another historical detail concerns Pornainen’s church: the older of its two bells dates back to 1731. The local heritage museum also preserves cultural and religious artefacts, including objects from the time of the first and second churches. Together, these places and objects offer different insights into Pornainen’s cultural history.

Lahan Manor is another of Pornainen’s significant cultural and historical sites. If you’d like your trip to include more than outdoor activities, you can add these historical themes to your exploration of the area. This lets you choose the river landscape, outdoor activities and cultural history as different focuses for your stay.
