Runni on the Kiurujoki is a Finnish spa town with a history reflected in its historic buildings and technical installations. The village is in Iisalmi, on the border between Kiuruvesi and Iisalmi. One of Finland’s oldest spa resorts, Runni still has a fully operational spa. You can shape your stay around wellness, cultural history and outdoor activities, rather than treating the town simply as a starting point for a single attraction.

Spa History and Wooden Lock

Several buildings tell the story of the spa’s development. The old hotel, dating from 1904, has been preserved and is still in use. The spa’s old treatment building was completed in 1910. The two dates refer to different buildings and provide a point of reference as you explore Runni’s history.

A special attraction is Neulatammi in Saarikoski. The historic structure was built in the 19th century in the Runni rapids for bathers and has been restored. It is one of the area’s attractions and is known as an old water massage facility. A 1.5-kilometre path through the rural landscape leads to historic Neulatammi.

The Saarikoski lock canal also connects the history of technology with the surroundings of the Kiurujoki: the canal, which straightens the river, is in the Runni area. Its wooden lock is the last one built in Finland. The restored canal has reopened to traffic. It can also be reached via a 1.5-kilometre path through the rural landscape. Saarikoski is part of an attraction network in Pohjois-Savo made up of industrial sites restored by Museovirasto.

If you prefer to experience history through stories, you can choose a cultural tour at Spa Hotel Runni. It visits the manor hotel and the drinking spring in Runni, while Runni expert Pekka Mäkinen recounts historical events from past centuries. The tour complements the buildings and installations with the stories connected to them.

Wellness, Exercise and Water

At Spa Hotel Runni’s spa, you can swim and relax in a variety of pools; there is also an outdoor whirlpool. The wellness clinic offers traditional treatments such as cupping, peat treatments and joint treatments, as well as various massages. Other facilities include an infrared sauna, a salt room, a light therapy room and a Neurosonic chair, which can be used by reservation. The wellness offering thus includes pools and relaxation areas as well as individual treatments and therapies.

For more active days, Runni has a fitness trail offering opportunities for outdoor exercise in both summer and winter. The suspension bridge is also an attraction. In summer, you can swim at the bathing spot beside it. If you would like to combine a water experience with a trip to Neulatammi, you can book a ride on the MS/koitto sauna raft. It accommodates 5–6 people, and the cruise goes to Neulatammi in Runni.

Choose the Right Accommodation for Your Stay

When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Runni, you can first consider which aspect of the area matters most to you. Should your stay mainly include time at the spa and wellness treatments, or would you like to make more room for cultural history and walks through the rural landscape? Outdoor options also vary by season: the fitness trail is mentioned for both summer and winter, while swimming at the suspension bridge is specifically a summer activity. These interests give your search for accommodation in Runni a clear direction without limiting your stay to a single activity.

Nordic Cuisine with Local Roots

The cuisine at Spa Hotel Runni serves Nordic flavours prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients and natural produce. It also draws on Runni’s history of more than a hundred years. Together with the spa, historic sites and outdoor activities, this gives a varied picture of the area: you can get to know Runni through its wellness offerings, as well as through its architectural and industrial history and the landscapes along the paths to Neulatammi and the canal.
