In North Karelia, Liperi lies on the northernmost shore of Lake Saimaa. The village of Liperi offers a clear cultural focus around its red brick church and several glimpses into local history. Outdoors, there are trails for a range of activities, as well as opportunities for birdwatching. Depending on your travel plans, you can choose to focus on historical sites, exercise or nature observation, rather than limiting your stay to just one kind of experience.

Church and village history in Liperi

The red brick church stands in the centre of the village, near the shore of Kirkkolahti. The building was designed by architect Georg Theodor Chiewitz and completed in the late 1850s. The Zachariassen organs are also part of the church’s history: dating from 1879, they are considered the oldest organs in North Karelia. There is a church museum at the back of the church. The architecture, organs and museum offer different points of connection with the village’s history.

Another glimpse into Liperi’s past can be found in the church village at Koulukuja 1. There, the Liperi-Seura association maintains an extensive rural museum complex. The Penttilä museum grounds provide a comprehensive insight into Liperi’s history and include, among other things, the Tähkä Open-Air Museum. Together with the church museum, this gives visitors a choice between ecclesiastical history and a broader look at life and the past of the region.

Trails, cycling and nature observation

The Kinttupolut trail network covers 65 kilometres and comprises seven loop trails. When there is no snow, the trails are suitable for mountain biking, hiking and trail running. Kinttupolut is also suitable for backpacking. In Liperi, marked trails, along with numerous shelters and huts, provide guidance and places to take a break. Trail conditions may vary by season. Mountain bikers can enjoy 65 kilometres of marked routes in Liperi; connecting trails lead directly to the Joensuu trail network, which has more than 200 kilometres of marked routes in total.

Those looking for an accessible trail will find the Luhtapuisto nature and recreation trail in the church village. It runs around Lake Vainolampi; here, too, trail conditions may vary depending on the season. The options are therefore quite distinct: Kinttupolut offers several types of active outings, while the Luhtapuisto trail is designed to be accessible and runs around a lake.

Spring and autumn migration are particularly interesting times for birdwatching. Lakes, rivers, streams, fields, mires and various types of forest offer resting places and habitats for numerous bird species. There is also a birdwatching lookout point. The migration periods mentioned can help you plan your visit around a specific interest in nature.
