Vuonislahti combines village culture with the landscape on the eastern shore of Lake Pielinen. There is plenty to discover, from an artists’ home and a mill museum to trails with literary connections; the beach and, in winter, the ice offer another side of the village. You can plan your trip around whether you want to focus on culture, activity, water or seasonal experiences.

Village Stories and Art

The Simpauttaja Trail leads to locations from stories set in his home village of Vuonislahti by writer Heikki Turunen. The trail begins in the courtyard of Wanhan Koulun Puoti. The Paateri Trail offers another connection to art: it leads from the village to sculptor Eva Ryynänen’s studio and artists’ home. The trail is easy to walk and is also suitable for cycling. If you explore Vuonislahti on foot or by bike, you will find two distinct cultural points of interest here.

The Ala-Kelvä Mill houses a small museum about the history of the mill. On display are old purchase agreements and photographs. Mills have stood on the Kelvänjoki for over 300 years; the interior of the present-day mill was arranged as a museum by Marja Sonninen, daughter of the Turunen family. A visit adds the history of milling to the literary and artistic themes.

Theatre is also part of village life: Vuonis-Kukkuteatteri is a summer theatre in the centre of the village. Its stage uses the Simpauttaja scenery from summer 2023. Vuonislahti’s year-round events also include the autumn Muikkumarkkinat.

Shoreline, Beach and Trails

Vuonislahti lies amid the famous national landscape that opens up from Koli. At the village end of Vuonislahti Beach is the Vuonislahti Heart, a selfie spot overlooking the peaks of Koli. Itikanhiekka is another appealing place to spend time by the water: this sandy beach is on a bay of Lake Pielinen at the southern end of the village. The water deepens only gradually there. The beach is suitable for families with children and has a changing room and a composting toilet.

If you want to fit some exercise into your day, you can use the 1.1-kilometre illuminated fitness trail. The Paateri Trail offers a different way to get outdoors: it links the route from the village with a visit to the artists’ home and is suitable for both walking and cycling. The range of options lets you choose an active outing or a beach visit as the main focus.

Winter Ice Routes

An ice-skating trail runs between Vuonislahti and Koli, alongside the ice road. It opens depending on ice conditions each year and remains open when the weather is suitable. The city maintains the trail and announces when it opens in its news updates. It opened on 12 February 2026; that winter, the approximately 4-kilometre loop ran from the harbour to Raapio Island. The ice road itself is about 7 kilometres long and is considered Europe’s longest inland-water ice road. It opens seasonally when ice and weather conditions allow. Current conditions are therefore essential when planning a winter visit.

Market Days and Getting There

In summer, Vuonislahti’s traditional Summer Day Market is held almost every Saturday on the grounds of the community hall. Delicacies and handicrafts are sold there. Along with the autumn Muikkumarkkinat, the market shows how village life can be experienced differently at different times of year.

Vuonislahti is served daily by passenger trains on the Joensuu–Nurmes railway line. This is a concrete point to consider when planning your journey, while the ice road and skating trail remain seasonal experiences. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Vuonislahti, you can decide whether to focus your trip on village culture and art, the beach and shoreline, or winter ice routes.
