Kallaste, also known as Kallastõ, combines experiences in nature with unusual historical traces. The village is located in a landscape where longer hikes, shorter trails, cycling tours and winter activities can be combined.

Natural surroundings around Kallaste

Kallastõ was merged with Tootsi in 1977. Tootsi is part of Haanja Nature Park in Võru Parish. Haanja Nature Park lies entirely within the Haanja bird and nature areas belonging to the Natura 2000 network. This classification gives the destination a clear landscape framework without reducing Kallaste to a single attraction.

The Kütioru hiking trail is particularly interesting for travel planning. The route is described in specific terms: From Võru, take Road No. 2, also known as E263, towards Luhamaa. At the Tootsi bus stop, turn off and follow the sign “Kütioru matkarada 3 km”. From the bus stop, the same road continues to the Kütioru Alpine Ski Centre.

Two trails for different day plans

The Kütioru hiking trail is 9.6 kilometres long. You should allow around four to five hours to complete it. This time estimate makes the trail an outing in its own right, for which you can set aside a substantial part of the day. The trail is intended for hiking and cycling, offering different ways to experience the surroundings actively.

There is also a short Kütioru hiking trail. It is approximately 2.8 kilometres long, marked with white paint markings and begins at a car park near the Kütioru Alpine Ski Centre. This means that two trail formats of different lengths are available when planning: a longer route with a set walking time to allow for, and a short trail with white markings. For a trip with several interests, this selection can help you combine active and more relaxing days sensibly.

Cultural-historical traces and a local tradition

Along the Kütioru hiking trail, you can explore former mill sites and other cultural-historical attractions. The written history of the place also reaches back further: a handwritten draft plan for Vastse Kasaritsa Manor from the mid-19th century lists Kallastõ in its geographical description.

A tradition from the village of Kallastõ also tells that the lord of Uue-Saaluse dammed a stream flowing out of Vaskna. As a result, three smaller lakes were said to have been united into Kavadi järv. The story offers a special reason to perceive the landscape not only as a route, but also as a setting for stories.

Winter option in the surrounding area

In the vicinity of Kallastõ, Kütiorg Centre has seven ski slopes and four ski lifts in winter. This also makes it possible to combine a stay with winter activities. When looking for accommodation in Kallaste, you can consider whether long hikes, short marked trails, cycling tours, cultural-historical discoveries or winter days should be the focus of your trip.
