Luunja Parish offers a wide range of travel experiences, from the rose garden and manor park to the river and bog, as well as horse-riding activities and rural life. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide first what you would like to focus on: culture, nature, water and activities involving horses each offer a different perspective on your trip.

Roses and Manor History

The Luunja Rose Garden offers a specific attraction for garden enthusiasts: a total of 58 rose varieties grow there. One is named “Luunja” and was bred by Estonian rose breeder Mart Ojasalu.

The park at Luunja Manor was transformed into an informal landscape park in the late 19th century. From the viewpoint with the yellow window, you can see the park and buildings in the manor complex, including the gardener’s house, distillery and smithy. The park design and the named manor buildings offer different historical points of interest.

Nature Trail and Bog Landscape

The 3 km Emajõe Nature Trail runs along the banks of the Emajõgi River, through its floodplain and through wet woodland. Part of the trail is wheelchair accessible. It may be impassable during high water, so check conditions before your visit.

Bog hikes can be organised year-round in Emajõe-Suursoo. In wet conditions, rafts or boats are recommended; in cold weather, skis or snowshoes. The distinction can help you choose: the nature trail passes through several types of landscape and is 3 km long, while the recommended means of getting around on bog hikes depend on wet and cold conditions. The historic winter routes in Emajõe-Suursoo have been mapped and designated for exploration. Luunja Parish operates the Emajõe-Suursoo Nature Centre.

River and Horse-Riding Activities

The hand-operated Kavastu ferry began operating in 1899 and is Estonia’s last operating river ferry. In the 2026 season, it is not running because of the uncertain condition of its access ramp on the riverbank. From Luunja landing stage, boats can travel along the Emajõgi to Tartu or Lake Võrtsjärv.

Saksa Riding School offers riding instruction for beginners and people with sporting goals, as well as individual training sessions. At celebrations, guests can meet horses and other farm animals and experience rural life. In summer, the school holds five-day riding camps for children and young people; no previous experience is required.

The time of year can also play a part in choosing activities: the riding camps take place in summer, while bog hikes can be organised year-round. The recommended means of getting around on these hikes vary according to wet and cold conditions.

A Culinary Highlight

The 2024 Kavastu Uhhaa and Fish Festival offered a specific culinary highlight: the programme included a competition to choose the best uhhaa cook.
