Church, Music and Estonian Educational History

Kambja Church was restored and consecrated on 11 July 2009. Since 2003, it has housed an organ with 12 stops, donated by the Swedish parish of Träslövsläge. With more than 600 seats, the church interior is remarkably spacious. Sunday services begin at 11 a.m.

The history of St. Martin’s Church in Kambja also goes back a long way: it was originally built in the 14th century and was repeatedly destroyed by fires and rebuilt during various wars. Kambja is also connected with the history of Estonian choral music. The first Estonian choir was founded here in 1794. The mixed choir Läte is active at the Kambja Cultural Centre and has taken part in every national song festival since the first Estonian Song Festival in 1869.

Another focus is educational history. The school in Kambja began operating in 1686, making it one of the first peasant schools in Estonia. In front of Kambja Church stands a monument to an Estonian folk school, erected in 1987. Near the church gates there is also a memorial commemorating the 300th anniversary of the Estonian peasant school and a fire altar. In 1996, a plaque commemorating the New Testament published in the South Estonian language in 1686 was unveiled in the church.

Churchyard and Cemetery as Historical Sites

The churchyard of Kambja Church contains symbolic gravestones for Bengt Gottfried Forselius, Ignatsi Jaak, Andreas Virginius and Albrecht Sutor. An oak tree in the churchyard was planted in 1932 by Swedish Crown Prince Gustav Adolf and continues to thrive. The monument to those who fell in the War of Independence also represents the local culture of remembrance. It was unveiled in 1929 and restored in 1989; a plaque on its back bears 63 names.

Kambja Cemetery lies on the northwestern slope of a hill in rising terrain, which is why the graves are arranged in terraces. A Neo-Gothic chapel is connected to the main gate, and two further chapels stand east of the main gate. The cemetery was consecrated in 1773; numerous tombstones and fences made of metal and stone have been preserved. Those interested in regional architectural forms, remembrance culture and historical details will find a distinctive focus here, away from classic excursion destinations.

Nature Trails and Winter Activities

The Kambja health trails are located in the surroundings of Kopsumäe and Köstrimäe, near Kambja alevik. They offer year-round opportunities for active exercise in nature and are suitable for cycling. The Kambja health running series began in 2016. In winters with plenty of snow, the Kambja–Pangodi ski track is also prepared. There is an ice-skating rink on Lake Kambja. This allows you to weigh culture, cycling, exercise in nature and winter activities when planning your trip, without limiting your stay to a single season.
