Kuressaare: Castle, Old Town, Beach and Adventure Trails

Kuressaare combines an exceptional fortress complex with a historic townscape, a beach and a variety of opportunities for active days. Those planning a trip to Kuressaare can choose between culture, exercise, water-based activities and options for different age groups. This combination helps you select a holiday apartment that suits your personal holiday plans.

Culture among the Castle, Old Town and City History

Kuressaare Castle is one of Estonia’s rare medieval architectural monuments. At the same time, it is the only completely preserved fortress complex in the Baltic states. The fortifications surrounding the castle were built between the 14th and 19th centuries and are considered a unique open-air museum of military architecture. Visitors can explore the development of fortifications there over the course of the centuries.

Kuressaare’s heritage conservation area includes the historic town centre with its castle fortress and surrounding earthwork ramparts, the park and waterfront area, the old town and historic suburbs. The architecture is particularly diverse: the area is characterised by a large number of stone houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, archaic wooden buildings and postmodern residential buildings from the Soviet era. For your walk, this means that not only individual sights but also the different architectural forms are part of the city experience itself.

The Aavik House Museum is also located in the centre of Kuressaare. It is dedicated to the linguist Johannes Aavik and the music teacher Joosep Aavik. Johannes Aavik lived in his parents’ home as a schoolboy from 1898 to 1902 and later worked as an Estonian teacher at Saaremaa Ühisgümnaasium from 1919 to 1926. The museum thus provides a personal insight into the history of language and education.

Beach, Park and Trails for Different Holiday Days

Kuressaare Beach in Ujula Bay is the municipality’s official bathing area. If you would like to include time by the water alongside sightseeing, this location complements the city’s cultural side with a maritime holiday experience. The historical development of the townscape can also be traced through the park: from 1861 onwards, an ambitious city park was created from the former fortress promenade under the direction of Mayor Hugo von der Borg. The first facilities included a summer café and a music pavilion.

For exercise, Kuressaare Tervisepark offers illuminated paths covered with sawdust chips. There are routes measuring 0.6 km, 1 km and 2 km, suitable for exercise all year round. The different distances can be incorporated into your daily plans without requiring you to choose the same route as you would for a longer excursion.

Experiences with Children and as a Shared Activity

Kuressaare Adventure Park has five courses of varying lengths and difficulty levels. Together, they have a total length of 600 metres. The park also includes a children’s park with low and safe courses. This allows you to distinguish between more challenging courses and a specifically designated area for children when planning your trip.

Kuressaare is therefore suitable for different holiday rhythms: one day can focus on fortress architecture and city history, while another can be devoted to the beach, park trails or a course. When looking for accommodation, it makes sense to first decide which of these types of experiences should be the focus of your trip. This keeps your choice of a holiday apartment aligned with your actual travel plans, rather than being based solely on a general accommodation category.
