Castles, Manor History and Gin from Tohisoo
The municipality’s historical attractions include the vassal castle of Angerja and Loone Fortress, also known as Lohu Jaanilinn. Angerja was built in the 14th or 15th century and is one of the oldest stone buildings in Rapla County. The dimensions of Loone’s former site have been preserved in historical records: the courtyard covered a total of 6,500 m², the rampart is 300 m long and up to 6 m high.
Kohila Manor was first mentioned in 1438. Its Classicist main building was constructed at the beginning of the 19th century, burned down in 1905 and was rebuilt in a modified form without a portico. The manor is currently privately owned. Another manor offers a culinary experience: the modern TOHI Distillery is located in the historic vodka kitchen of Tohisoo Manor. During guided tours, you can see how gin is made; a gin tasting is also available. The historic distillery also contains modern event spaces.
