Värska II Forest House is also located on the shore of Lake Õrsava and is therefore one of the named points of reference on this body of water.

Põhjalaager: History on Lake Õrsava

The Petseri Northern Camp, officially called Eesti Kaitseväe Petseri Põhjalaager, was established in 1926 in the village of Värska on the shores of Lake Õrsava. More than ten buildings from the original construction period have survived at Põhjalaager. The house of General Nikolai Reek was fully restored and opened to visitors in 2020. The grounds of the Petseri Northern Camp can be viewed from the outside; its preserved buildings and lakeside location therefore also provide insight into the historic site.

At Põhjalaager, a memorial stone commemorates the camp of the Estonian armed forces from 1926 to 1941. Another memorial reference is to the Estonian officers persecuted by the Soviet regime; the date 14 June 1941 is named on the memorial plaque. These specific years and the memorial site provide historical orientation for a visit without reducing the landscape to a single era.

Exhibition and thematic exploration

At the Värska Visitor Centre – General Reek's House, an exhibition provides information about the Petseri Northern Camp, established in Setomaa in the 1920s, events of the Estonian War of Independence, and the use of therapeutic mud and mineral water in the local spa area. Those who want to combine the circular trail or views of the preserved buildings with additional background information will find several themes brought together here in a cultural context. Värska's first water borehole is now closed; the history of local mineral water use nevertheless remains one of the exhibition topics.

The Värska Farm Museum can offer a themed programme about the Petseri Northern Camp on request. When planning a trip, this allows visitors to weigh up independent exploration, the exhibition and a requested thematic in-depth experience.
