Sindi: Industrial History, Parks and Rapids

Sindi combines its industrial past with green parks and a wide range of experiences along the Pärnu River. Industrial History in Sindi

Sindi’s history is closely connected with the textile industry. In 1833, the Riga merchant Johann C. Wöhrmann founded a wool manufactory and built a single-purpose industrial settlement. The workers’ settlement of the Sindi-Kalev factory comprised 33 houses arranged in three rows. In the mid-19th century, the Sindi-Kalev factory was the largest industrial enterprise in Livonia.

A particularly tangible place to explore this past is the Sindi Museum. It is located in the historic building where the Sindi Kalev Factory Association was founded on 17 November 1902. The Orthodox church also forms part of the town’s historical character: its construction began in 1895, financed by the Moscow merchant Roman Shön and the Sindi-Kalev Factory Association. It was consecrated on 5 July 1899.

River Route, Rapids and Special Water Experiences

For active days of travel, the 104 km Paide–Sindi river route provides a clear point of reference. It is designed for kayaks, canoes and SUPs and ends at Sindi’s open-air swimming pool on the left bank of the river, about 600 metres downstream from the Sindi Bridge. Those wishing to plan a longer stretch on the water can take this route into account when choosing their travel period and planning their days.

The Sindi rapids were created in 2020 in place of a weir that had previously stood there. After it was demolished, spawning grounds for fish were established, and the Pärnu River was opened to fish migration. At the same time, the rapids offer opportunities for whitewater paddling, kayak slalom, freestyle paddling, canoeing and rafting. They also serve as a starting and finishing point for water tours. Stages of the Nordic Cup take place on the rapids in Estonia; during the spring flood period, the Türi-Tori Downriver Race is held on the Pärnu River.

Parks, Paths and Green Urban History

Sindi can also be explored through its green spaces. The first green area was created in 1834 after the cloth factory was completed. The city’s largest green network is connected to the Pärnu River. Older trees and several avenues in Kiriku, Vabriku, Hirveaia, Kooli and Klubi parks date from the middle and second half of the 19th century. Sõpruse Park and Kiriku Park are protected as part of a green network.

The Sindi Health Trail runs through Sõpruse Park and offers a view of the river. The health and cross-country ski trails in Sindi are suitable for running, walking and cross-country skiing. Sõpruse Park also has a children’s playground. This makes it possible to combine active sections, quieter paths and historical impressions when planning a trip.
