Vormsi Parish: Nature, Island Culture and Special Discoveries

Vormsi Parish combines protected landscapes, a distinctive island culture and unusual discoveries. Between the coast, the former sea lagoon Prästvike, hiking trails and historic farmsteads, encounters with nature alternate with insights into the history of the Vormsi Swedes. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home for a varied vacation can combine different ideas for each day here: a hike, a museum visit, a cycling tour or a guided experience in the landscape.

Protected Landscapes and Special Natural Sites

The Vormsi Landscape Protected Area was established in 2000 to protect the characteristic landscape of the archipelago in western Estonia and endangered cultural landscapes typical of the region. Common terns, little terns, Eurasian bitterns, greylag geese and western marsh harriers find a habitat in this area. The reed belts of Lake Prästvike also provide birds with feeding and shelter areas. Prästvike itself is a former sea lagoon.

Unique and rare lichen communities grow on the Rumpo Peninsula. The Rumpo Hiking Trail leads to viewpoints overlooking the bays of Hullo and Sviby as well as the small offshore islands. You can explore the trail on foot or by bicycle. Another short excursion follows the 2-kilometre-long Allika Hiking Trail to three different springs. For planning your day, this trail offers a clearly defined route, while Rumpo focuses above all on landscapes and views.

At the Huitberg limestone outcrop, an approximately 500-square-metre Ordovician coral reef structure is visible, rising 2.5 metres above the surrounding plain. Fossilised corals and other Ordovician fossils are exposed there. Fossil-rich Ordovician limestone is also exposed on the coast of Saxby. The beach there features a limestone outcrop and rubble ridges extending far into the interior of the island.

Island History to See and Experience

St Olav’s Church dates from the first half of the 14th century. Its square nave, old ceiling paintings in the chancel and missing tower define its appearance. Vormsi Cemetery contains 343 ring crosses dating from 1743 to 1923. The collection is considered the largest of its kind in the world and vividly illustrates the island’s distinctive historical character.

The Vormsi Farm Museum presents a restored farm typical of the Vormsi Swedes from the period before the Second World War. On display are authentically renovated buildings with thatched roofs, household items, clothing and photo exhibitions about life on Vormsi and in other coastal Swedish areas. The museum also includes a functioning traditional smoke sauna. The Six Foot Museum displays more than 550 antiques from Vormsi.

Trails, Coast and Guided Experiences

The Lääne-Vormsi Cycling Route runs along the coast of Saxby and is managed by Vormsi Municipality. The Saxby Lighthouse is recognised as an architectural monument. Visits outside official opening hours are possible by appointment at +372 5249 944. Those interested in plants can learn about common medicinal plants on the Herbal Remedy Walk, discuss their uses and round off the two- to three-hour walk with a shared tea.

Marine Transport from Nordgrund offers guided experiences for up to 10 people, including seal-watching tours and nature walks with a local guide. Animals’ Visit on Vormsi Island focuses on a guided encounter with animals in their everyday surroundings. These activities emphasise different aspects: observing, hiking, cycling or taking a closer look at the island’s history.

The Right Accommodation for Planning Your Trip

When looking for accommodation in Vormsi Parish, it is worth deciding first what kind of holiday rhythm you want. For an active stay, the trails of Rumpo and Allika, the coastal route and the nature activities take centre stage. Those who prefer culture and local history can include the church, cemetery and two museums in their plans. The Vormsi ferry is also part of planning your arrival: it carries cars and pedestrians.

For further orientation within the municipality, you can also visit Förby. This allows you to combine the search for a holiday apartment or holiday home with your personal interests in landscapes, culture and activities, without limiting your vacation to just one type of experience.
