Koljaku combines a layered historical cultural landscape with forest trails, river history, and unusual natural features. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Koljaku can therefore explore the area according to different interests: among former manor estates and historic transport routes, on a walk through forest landscapes, or on a longer hiking day in Lahemaa National Park.

Historical Traces Around Koljaku

The historical cultural landscape of Koljaku includes the former Lemuselja, Laviku, and Sae manor estates of Palmse Manor, as well as Ligedama in the territory of Sagadi Manor. Within the village boundaries there was also the Koljaku forest ranger's station of Palmse Manor. These names provide access to a landscape whose history is visible not only in individual buildings but also in former farmstead and administrative structures.

A particularly tangible site is the cemetery of the Lemuselja farmstead. It is listed as a historical monument under number 22307. The farmstead family established the cemetery next to their home in 1915. Today, six concrete grave boxes and several bases of former grave markers remain there. For visitors interested in regional history and quiet, place-specific memories, this site offers a distinct point of interest.

The Palmse parish house also tells of the area's eventful history: it was ceremonially opened on 30 September 1896 and burned down on 14 July 1941. Another historical trace leads back to 1711. At that time, Lawwiko Jürri, circa 1644–1723, operated the Laviku mill together with his wife Kay.

Forest, Water, and Trails

In the vicinity of Koljaku, the Laevapõhja spring flows through a deep, ship-shaped ravine. On old maps and in local usage, it is also called Aisadam or Ahisadam. The Võsu River, also known as Wesenbeck, flowed through historic Koljaku; the Lavike and Sae farmsteads stood on its banks. Such water and place names make the landscape particularly interesting for travellers who would like to notice historical connections while exploring the area.

The hiking trail initially runs through the primeval forests of the former Oandu–Koljaku nature reserve along the prehistoric Seljaku Trail. Around the Koljaku picnic area, the forests are rich in mushrooms and berries in autumn. This seasonal feature can be incorporated into your travel plans without making your stay revolve around a single activity.

For a longer day of hiking, the 18-kilometre Võsu–Nõmmeveski trail is available. It lies in Lahemaa National Park and leads from the Võsu campsite to Nõmmeveski. Take the length into account when planning your day and choose your accommodation according to the focus you want to set: short nature observations, historical discoveries, or an extended day of hiking do not necessarily require the same type of trip.

History as Part of Travel Planning

Koljaku's transport routes also have a history of their own. The road over Koljaku Hill was cut down in the winter of 1931–1932. In summer 1932, the new section of road was reinforced with fieldstones and fitted with cement posts along the roadside. Travelling with children, you can use details like these as an opportunity to notice earlier forms of construction and travel along the way, rather than looking for historical information only in museums.

As a separate addition to your travel plans, a wildlife-watching tour in Alutaguse and Lahemaa National Park focuses on lynx, brown bears, and wolves. This nature experience offers a different emphasis from the historical sites in Koljaku. When looking for suitable accommodation, you can therefore decide whether your trip should be shaped primarily by local history, forest landscapes, hiking, or a planned wildlife-watching experience.
