Discover Nõmmemaa: Dunes, Moorland and Lakes

Nõmmemaa features a landscape of unusual contrasts: 30 m-high dunes, a protected former sandstone quarry from the Soviet era, moorland trails and lakes are at the heart of its nature experiences. Those planning a trip with walks, nature observation and time by the water can choose the right holiday apartment or holiday house according to their preferred daily rhythm.

Dunes and quarry as defining features of the landscape

The dunes at Veski Quarry are 30 m high. Their formation dates back 8,000 years, when the Littorina Sea lay here. Veski Quarry itself is now a protected former sandstone quarry from the Soviet era. The protected natterjack toad has settled in its water-filled depressions. This makes the site a place where landscape history meets a specific natural feature.

The landscape around Veski Quarry is recovering from the forest fire of 2008. An information board covers forest fire prevention, the natterjack toad and the sand lizard. For your visit, it therefore provides an objective introduction to the area's special features before you continue exploring the surroundings.

Moorland hike to Lake Tänavjärv

A 4 km round trip leads from the Veskijärve campsite through the moorland to Lake Tänavjärv. You can include the route as a separate nature outing in your day's plans. Especially if you want to combine different interests, this trail offers a different focus from spending time at the lake or observing the landscape at the quarry. Take the full route length into account when planning.

The Veskijärve campsite is located in the Läänemaa Suursoo Landscape Protection Area. On site, there is a shelter, a fire pit and a dry toilet. A maximum of three tents is allowed, with up to four people each.

Spring, wildlife observation and fishing

In spring, you can hear the calls of the rare natterjack toad in an old quarry. The site is 1 km from the Veskijärve campsite. Those interested in animals and the special habitats of quarries will find a seasonally distinctive reason to visit here.

Lake Veskijärv is also among the nature experiences mentioned around Nõmmemaa and is suitable for fishing. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between a hike through the moorland, nature observation at the quarry and time by the water.

Getting there and choosing accommodation

At kilometre 26 of the Nõva road, turn towards Variku. After 4 km, follow the “RMK Veskijärv” sign again, then continue for 2.2 km to the campsite. This sequence is useful when planning your journey if the campsite is intended as the starting point for the moorland hike described above.

When searching for a holiday apartment or holiday house in Nõmmemaa, you can therefore first decide which experiences you prefer: Would you like to discover the dunes and the quarry, listen for the natterjack toad in spring, hike to Lake Tänavjärv or fish at Lake Veskijärv?
