Kalana – Hiking, Coast and Ristna Lighthouse
Accommodation in Kalana
Kalana combines the landscape of the Kõpu Peninsula with the coast, hiking trails and special places to visit. Those looking for a mixture of nature and culture for their holiday will find a range of ways to shape their trip here: a marked hiking route, the Ristna Lighthouse, the “Mere kaubamaja” exhibition and Ristna Beach with its distinctive coastal character.
Hiking through dunes and heath pine forest
The third section of the Hiiumaa hiking route begins at the Ristna Visitor Centre. From there, the route leads to the coast, along dune ridges and through a heath pine forest to the Kaleste campsite. The route therefore combines several landscape impressions, so you do not have to limit your plans to a single natural attraction. The Hiiumaa hiking route is marked with signposts and white-green-white trail markings.
The Ristna Visitor Centre is located in the forests of the Kõpu Peninsula in the village of Kalana. If you are travelling with your family, you can combine the focus on hiking with other discoveries and, depending on your interests, plan an active day trip or one with a stronger cultural focus. When choosing a holiday apartment in Kalana, it is therefore particularly important to consider whether you want to use the location as a base for nature experiences, coastal observation or sightseeing.
Lighthouse and maritime insights
The Ristna Lighthouse is located at Ristna Cape in the village of Kalana. It was assembled in 1874 from parts purchased in Paris. The light of the Ristna Lighthouse rises 37 metres above sea level. These details make the lighthouse a distinctive destination for anyone interested in coastal history, technical structures and navigation at sea.
The “Mere kaubamaja” (“Sea store”) exhibition is located in an auxiliary building of the Ristna Visitor Centre. In addition, the Ristna Sea Store has fixed visiting hours: from 1 May to 31 August, it is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. From 1 September to 30 April, you can visit it from Wednesday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; outside these hours, visits are possible by appointment. This makes it possible to incorporate a cultural visit specifically into your travel plans.
Ristna Beach: Coast with its own character
Ristna Beach is located at the tip of the Kõpu Peninsula. The beach is not an official bathing beach and has no lifeguard service. This information is part of realistic planning by the water. With winds from westerly directions, surf waves roll towards the shore there. Ristna Beach therefore particularly appeals to travellers who want to observe the coastal landscape and wind conditions or get to know the maritime character of the place, rather than simply spend traditional beach days.
The Kalana Yacht Harbour is also part of the local orientation. At the fishing pier, it has 14 berths, while the regular quay has 24 berths. You can take these different focal points into account when looking for accommodation: a holiday apartment in Kalana suits travel plans in which you combine the hiking route, lighthouse, exhibition and coast according to your own interests.
