Accommodation in Vikipalu
Vikipalu offers several distinct perspectives to consider when planning a trip: a protected area in Vikipalu küla, an off-road driving area in the surrounding area, and historical connections to the Estonian War of Independence. The Aavoja River comes with a specific usage restriction. This does not make for one fixed holiday itinerary, but rather offers different focal points to weigh when choosing a destination and holiday rental. First consider whether nature, water, activities, or history should shape your stay.
Nature and activities
The Vikipalu metsise püsielupaik nature reserve is a protected area in Vikipalu küla. It gives the nature theme a specific local connection. If nature and landscape are important considerations in your trip planning, you can treat it as a focus in its own right. An RMK description dated 17 July 2018 places the Mustjõe off-road driving area in the vicinity of Vikipalu and describes a 3-hectare site in a former sandstone quarry on the shore of the scenic Mustjõe quarry lake. This means the area brings together former land use, a lakeshore, and an activity theme; in terms of subject matter, it differs from the protected area in the village. Check the current operating rules before visiting.
Water with a clear usage restriction
The Aavoja River is open for public use, except for the impoundment area 300 m upstream of the Aavoja Reservoir dam. The exact boundary matters when planning: the restriction applies to this section upstream of the dam, not to the river as a whole. If you plan to include the Aavoja, keep this specific exception in mind. This makes it possible to distinguish general access from the section that is expressly excluded.
The battle and the station’s history
The Battle of Kehra took place on 4 January 1919. It was the first successful offensive by an armoured train and a turning point in the Estonian War of Independence. Calling it a turning point shifts the focus from the date alone to its significance in the wider war of independence. This places a specific event alongside its significance in the broader course of the war—a historical focus clearly distinct from an interest in nature or water.
The history of the railway station near the monument to the Battle of Kehra also includes a name change: during the independence period, it was called Lahinguvälja; in 1957, it was renamed Vikipalu. This lets you distinguish between two periods: the battle on 4 January 1919 and the station’s later renaming.
Weighing up the right location
When choosing a holiday rental, it may help to distinguish between the locations: the protected area is in Vikipalu küla; the Mustjõe off-road driving area was described in 2018 as being in the vicinity of Vikipalu. If being close to the village is what matters most to you, focus your search on Vikipalu; if the off-road driving area is your main interest, take its location in the surrounding area into account. If you are travelling with others, compare these criteria with everyone’s interests before deciding where to stay.
