Coastal farmsteads, forest trails and islands give Viimsi a variety of sides. When looking for a holiday apartment, your preferred focus is a good starting point: museum and market culture, nature trails and island visits each involve different planning considerations.

Coastal Culture and History

At the Viimsi Open Air Museum, the Kingu coastal farmstead complex forms the main part of the site. The 150-year-old complex is protected as a national cultural monument. The exhibition “Spirit Carriers and Smugglers” is housed in a root cellar at the threshing house; Lighthouse Alley displays scale models of seven Estonian lighthouses. In autumn, the “May There Always Be Bread!” programme includes fieldwork and bread-making. The farmers’ market right next to the museum sells Estonian food and fresh fish. It is open year-round on Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm.

The Estonian War Museum is housed in Viimsi Manor, which belonged to General Johan Laidoner, Commander-in-Chief of the Estonian War of Independence. The permanent exhibition takes visitors through the wars in which Estonia and Estonians took part, from prehistory to overseas deployments by the Estonian Defence Forces. The Heavy Artillery Hall explores the Estonian Defence Forces’ eleven-year deployment in Afghanistan. The Play Headquarters features a mini-bunker of the Forest Brothers, a climbing wall, building blocks for constructing castles and miniature uniforms. The museum can also arrange guided tours of military history sites on the Viimsi Peninsula.

The Museum of Coastal Folk, housed in an old school building, offers another glimpse into life on the coast. Its collection includes objects from the daily lives and activities of coastal residents, from fishing hooks to boats. Young visitors can enjoy a maritime-themed playroom. Randvere St. Peter's Church was built between 1848 and 1852.

Forest and Protected Landscapes

The municipality of Viimsi vald is home to five nationally protected natural sites covering a total area of around 2,325 hectares: Prangli hoiuala, Prangli maastikukaitseala, Naissaare looduspark, the park of Viimsi Manor and Haabneeme sanglepik. There are also eight locally protected landscape conservation areas covering a total of 1,628 hectares, which are managed by Viimsi vald.

The RMK Viimsi Visitor Center is located in a renovated cowshed dating back to the manor era and features the permanent exhibition “Metsas on väge!” (“Power in the Forest!”). Bus 114 runs directly from central Tallinn to the “Meremärgi” stop. Alternatively, take bus 1A to “Viimsi keskus”, then walk or take local bus V1 to “Meremärgi”.

The 3.1-kilometre Tädu Nature Trail is located in the Mäealuse Landscape Protection Area and provides information about forest inhabitants and natural phenomena. Various buses run to the “Tädu kuusk” stop; from there, it is about 100 metres to the start of the trail. At a relaxed pace, the route takes about 1.5 hours. At the end of the trail, there is a campfire site where you can light a fire and have a picnic.

Beach and Island Destinations

Haabneeme’s sandy beach is a swimming spot with clean, warm water. Facilities include lifeguards, bicycle racks, beach cabins, sun loungers, toilets and two beach volleyball courts. You can choose from a range of experiences for your trip: a day at the beach, a museum visit or a longer walk along a nature trail.

Viimsi vald provides transport connections to the islands of Prangli and Naissaar, which are permanently inhabited. Naissaar is accessible only by sea; the crossing from the mainland takes about an hour. Ferry timetables are seasonal and depend on the operator, so check the connection before you travel. On the island, people mainly get around in large trucks and on foot along forest and sandy tracks; there are no paved roads.

The 7-kilometre North Trail on Naissaar is also known as the Military Trail. This coastal route includes military history sites such as Estonian Battery No 5 and Batteries 10A and 10B, and passes ten information boards. On Prangli, a bookable hiking and sauna tour passes through fishing villages and pine forests and along sandy beaches, ending with a seaside sauna session.
