Rummu Quarry combines a crystal-clear blue-green lagoon with an artificial hill and an unusual prison history. At Murru Prison, historical insights meet activities on and in the water. Whether you want to focus on a guided tour, outdoor exercise or a water activity, Rummu offers a range of ways to shape your stay.

Murru Prison and its history

The main buildings of Murru Prison were built between the 1960s and 1980s. The prison closed in 2012 and is now presented as a museum. After quarrying ended, water in the Rummu Quarry area covered the prison walls and buildings. The history of the site and its present-day waterscape are therefore closely connected.

Guided tours include the prison's interiors, cells, punishment areas, work and ancillary rooms, and the surrounding landscape. Those who want to explore the quarry can use an audio guide or book a guided tour. The audio tour at Murru Prison includes nearly 20 stops and is available in Estonian, English, Russian, German, Finnish and Latvian. As the language selection may change, it is best to check before your visit.

Lagoon and quarry activities

There are several ways to explore Rummu Quarry. The seasonal inflatable water park is a floating obstacle course, and SUP boards are also available to rent seasonally. Rowing boats can be rented for short outings and explorations on the water. If you prefer to stay on land, the disc golf park has 12 baskets and is also suitable for beginners. The adventure park has arcade games and electric buggies.

For those interested in diving, the diving package at Rummu Quarry includes a theory course, equipment rental, one dive and a day pass. A beginner diving experience for visitors aged 12 and over is also offered under the guidance of diving instructors; seasonal conditions apply to bookings. A university paper from 2021 also describes an excavator left underwater that is visible to divers. Snorkelling experiences are offered at Rummu Quarry and the Underwater Prison.
