Rae raba forms the northeastern boundary of Rae küla. Along its edge closest to the village runs the Pirita-Ülemiste Canal, which connects the Pirita River with the Vaskjala Reservoir and Lake Ülemiste. The edge of the bog and the water infrastructure offer two different perspectives on the landscape: the bog marks the edge of the village, while the canal links named bodies of water. For a trip to Rae, this contrast is an illuminating introduction to local themes.

Traces across long periods of time

In Rae küla, offering stones and burial mounds indicate that people have lived there for several thousand years. Rae mõis, by contrast, was first mentioned in written sources in 1390. The two clues tell different stories of the past: one suggests early settlement, while the other is a written record with a precise date. Rae mõis received its name after it passed into the possession of Tallinn’s city council. The name thus also records a chapter in its history of ownership.

Another historical thread leads to horticulture. Jaan Jürgenson, who adopted the family name Raeda in 1938, established a selection garden and a nursery at Rae mõis. The Jaan Raeda Selection Garden is protected. The change from Jürgenson to Raeda makes the person behind this story tangible; the selection garden and nursery also show the focus on horticulture. Those interested in how a place has developed will find a different perspective here from that offered by the early settlement traces or the manor’s written history.

A historical trace in the landscape

The military past, too, is tied to a clearly named place: the Rae positsiooni rooduvarjend, located in Rae vald, belongs to the III Defence Sector. A military railway connected this shelter to Tallinn. Its embankment can still be seen today beneath a straight stretch of Raeküla tee, from Rae küla to the intersection with Loopera tee. The former connection and its still-visible railway embankment can therefore be distinguished as two layers of time in the same infrastructure.

Plan your journey and choose the right base

For travel planning, it is important to check for updates: Bus route R20 was announced for the Uuesalu – Rae küla – Jüri route starting 2 September 2026. Check the current timetable before travelling.

When looking for a holiday rental, it may help to compare the different themes. Rae mõis’s history of ownership and horticulture, on the one hand, contrasts with the military railway connection to Tallinn; there is also the much earlier settlement, indicated by the stones and burial mounds. Consider whether you would prefer your stay to be shaped by these historical perspectives or by the bog and waterside landscape.
