At the northwestern tip of the Pakri Peninsula stands the stone Pakri Lighthouse, overlooking the sea and nearby islands. At the same time, historical traces in the Paldiski area date back at least to the Middle Ages. The limestone cliff, distinctive landmark and eventful local history give Paldiski Linn its own character. A hiking trail, e-bike tours, a guided bus tour and an audio guide offer different ways to explore the area.

Cliff Landscape and Lighthouse

The Pakri Landscape Protection Area lies within the city of Paldiski and includes most of the limestone cliff on the Pakri Peninsula. The Pakri Lighthouse stands on one such cliff. The stone tower was completed in 1889, 80 metres from its predecessor; the lighthouse complex is protected as a cultural monument under state protection. Here, a distinctive landform meets a structure with a history of its own. If you are interested in coastal landscapes, the view from the lighthouse offers a special connection to the sea and the nearby islands.

History Between Rågervik and Muula mäed

The area was originally known by the Swedish name Rågervik (Rogerwiek) and was inhabited for centuries by Estonia’s coastal Swedes. Construction of a large harbour and naval fortress began in Paldiski in 1718. From 1962 to 1994, Paldiski was completely sealed off. These periods are part of the town’s history, as are the ruins of Peter the Great’s naval fortress, popularly known as Muula mäed. The surviving sections include the western and northern bastions.

The Orthodox congregation of St. George’s Church in Paldiski is also one of Estonia’s oldest continuously existing Orthodox congregations. The church’s current stone building is neoclassical and also features Baroque elements. Visitors interested in architecture can see various historical styles here alongside the wooden building of the Amandus Adamson Studio Museum.

Museums Offering Different Perspectives

The Paldiski Local History Museum focuses on the town’s history: it displays nearly 200 enlarged photographs from the early 20th century, as well as books, maps and documents. The permanent exhibition “Historical Weapons from Around the World” features around 150 objects. Together, these collections offer a broad look at history and objects from a range of subjects.

By contrast, the Amandus Adamson Studio Museum focuses on the sculptor’s studio and personal traces. The museum is located in his summer studio; the house displays personal furniture, family photographs and documents. Adamson designed and built the house himself. It is an example of early 20th-century wooden lace architecture. Art workshops are held there in summer, and guided tours can also be arranged. If you would like a workshop or guided tour to be a highlight of your stay, check the dates and booking options in advance.

Hiking Trail, Tours and Planning Your Day

The Paldiski Hiking Trail leads from Paldiski to the North Estonian Klint escarpment and Pakri neem. The return route runs through the Pakri Wind Farm to Paldiski. The first section is marked with the blue-and-white markings of the Coastal Hiking Route; public roads are indicated for the return journey. Another way to explore is the guided bus tour “Paldiski, the secret town,” which includes a hike from the Muula hills to the Pakri Lighthouse.

The audio guide for Paldiski and the Pakri Peninsula offers both a short walking route and a driving route. Both routes are available in Estonian, English and Russian. The E-Bike Estonia experience is available as a regular tour, a private group tour or a route you can follow independently using GPS. Rides on electric fat bikes or mountain bikes combine forest trails, scenic views and cultural-historical stops around Paldiski and the Pakri Peninsula. The audio guide and e-bike experience therefore differ both in how you get around and in how you explore the stops. Ticket, app, booking and equipment arrangements may change; check the details you need for your plans in advance.
