Ardu
Accommodation in Ardu
Ardu is located in western Kõrvemaa along the lower reaches of the Pirita River. Extensive forests, bogs, raised bogs and eskers shape the landscape and give the area a distinctly nature-oriented character. Those looking for a combination of tranquil scenery, hiking and regional history for their trip will find various ways to incorporate these elements into their daily plans.
Forest landscapes and water around Ardu
The Ardu loodusala nature area covers 42.5 ha and extends across Ardu alevik and the villages of Kukepala, Rava and Silmsi. It was established to protect a valuable forest community. The diverse woodland provides a suitable habitat for the black stork. For those interested in nature, this means that not only the landscape itself is of interest, but also the question of how forests and bog areas shape the surroundings of the village.
The Paunküla Reservoir is located near Ardu. It was created between 1959 and 1960 by damming the Pirita River. State-protected cult stones dating from the 1st millennium BC can also be found near the reservoir. The river is likewise an immediate part of the village landscape: in Ardu, two stone bridges and one wooden bridge cross the Pirita River.
Hiking trails for different levels of ability
The Oandu–Aegviidu–Ikla hiking trail passes through the centre of Ardu. In the surrounding area, the hiking trails of the Paunküla Hills offer routes of varying lengths and difficulty. These include a large 12 km circular trail and two smaller circular trails. Those travelling with hikers of differing experience levels can therefore take the desired distance and difficulty into account when planning the day, without having to limit the area to just one type of nature experience.
When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday house in Ardu, this mix of proximity to the village, river landscapes and hiking destinations can provide helpful guidance. The key question is whether you would prefer to spend your days on longer circuits in the Paunküla Hills, on a section of the hiking trail that passes through the village, or exploring cultural attractions.
Archaeological traces and places of remembrance
Ardu also has a remarkable prehistoric side. The village is home to a settlement and burial site of the Boat Axe culture, with finds dating from 3000 to 2000 BC. In 2001, a memorial stone for the “Ardu Man”, described as an ancestor from the Neolithic period, was erected near the school. These sites give a journey through Ardu a historical dimension without requiring a major museum visit.
Near Ardu, a monument commemorating a decisive battle was unveiled on Treieli mägi on 4 September 1932. Those interested in the region’s past can combine such places of remembrance with the landscape and the river crossings. Ardu is also home to Ardu Raamatukogu, located in Ardu alevik at Kesk tee 6, 75001.
Ardu as a starting point for planning your trip
The present-day village landscape includes a modern stadium as well as basketball and volleyball courts beside the school building. There is also an earlier-established tennis court by the river. A former school building on Tartu maantee has been converted into modern accommodation. These different facets make Ardu a destination where nature, village life and historical traces stand side by side.
When choosing accommodation in Ardu, you can therefore base your decision on the experiences you want from your trip: forest and bog landscapes, hiking trails of varying difficulty, the Pirita River or the village’s cultural traces. For further trip planning, you can also compare Rava, Triigi, Kantküla and Kiruvere.
