Kahala: Lake, Moor and Culture by Lake Kahala

Kahala combines a distinctive lake landscape with moorland, coastal views and traces of history. At its heart is Lake Kahala in Harju County, in Kuusalu Parish and the village of Kahala, about 5 kilometres northeast of Kuusalu. The publicly accessible body of water lies within the Lahemaa Nature Area (EE0010173), providing a special setting for a trip that brings together nature experiences, regional history and active days.

Lake Kahala and its landscape

The lake is not simply a body of water, but the result of a long landscape history. Between 7,500 and 8,500 years ago, Lake Kahala became an independent body of water when a beach ridge separated the lagoon of Ancylus Lake from the coastal area. Today, the lake has a weak flow. It is fed by the Oldoja stream, drainage ditches from the surrounding fields and springs emerging from the bedrock. Its outflow runs via the Loo stream to Salmistu Bay.

Kahala Bog surrounds the lake in the depression of a former lagoon of the Yoldia Sea. This combination of water, moorland and former coastal landscape shapes the character of the area. Several guided activities explore the landscape in different ways. Lahemaa Retked offers a guided nature hike on the paths between Muuksi and Tsitre, leading to Muuksi Hillfort. From the cliff edge, views open up over Kolga Bay and the Juminda Peninsula. A 30-kilometre guided cycling tour in Lahemaa National Park includes a stop at Muuksi linnamägi. This allows Kahala to be experienced according to your preference, on foot, by bicycle or from the water.

The Muuksi linnamägi car park is also useful for finding your way around the area: from there, a staircase path leads to the limestone cliff, which offers a beautiful view of the sea. The group of Hundikangrud stone-slab graves lies about 1.3 kilometres northwest of Lake Kahala on a limestone plateau and comprises around 65 graves. This combines landscape and history without limiting the trip to a single experience.

Historic sites and cultural discoveries

In the village of Muuksi, the Toomani Farm Museum is located in a former granary of Toomani Farm. The farm is also associated with the architects Erika Nõva and August Volberg, who came from there. On the southeastern shore of Lake Kahala lies Kalamäe, which was mentioned in 1241 as the property of monks. On the eastern shore, Kahala sacred grove recalls another facet of the landscape: the formerly protected woodland covers 0.9 hectares.

Muuksi linnamägi was first settled in the 1st millennium BC; the rampart was only built at the end of prehistoric times. Those interested in older settlement history will find an engaging contrast here to the lake's natural surroundings. In Uuri, a heritage farm preserves, maintains and promotes cultural heritage through training, events, community work and crafts. Pärimuskoda offers workshops ranging from spinning to woodworking.
