Havnsø: Discover the Harbour, Heathland and Coast

Havnsø combines maritime life with a varied coastal landscape. In the harbour, fishing, ferry traffic and pleasure boats come together, while at the western end of the town, Vesterlyng extends into a vast heathland and beach landscape. Heathland, dunes and unique nature

Eskebjerg Vesterlyng encompasses Zealand’s largest heathland area, with scattered vegetation. The landscape includes grazed heathland with juniper scrub, beach meadows and dune areas. A long stone formation separates the area from the adjacent farmland. Vesterlyng has been protected under the Danish Nature Protection Act since 1945 and is part of Natura 2000 site no. 154. A total of 1,819 species have been recorded in the area, including 199 Red List species. This gives visitors many concrete reasons to plan a stay not only around the beach, but also with an open eye for the surrounding landscape.

Smaller natural areas also add to the overall picture. Mareskoven is an approximately 6-hectare old coppice woodland of hazel and elm. Two marked hiking routes begin at the large P6 car park in Vesterlyng. The Ice Age Route also runs through Eskebjerg Vesterlyng. For longer hiking plans, the approximately 15-kilometre Bjergstien is available. It leads from Eskebjerg Vesterlyng via Højsted Overdrev and Stokkebjerg Skov and ends at Jyderup Station via the Jyderupstien. Parts of the route are not signposted; this is a feature to take into account when planning your day.

Harbour, ferries and beaches

Havnsø Harbour is a combined fishing, ferry and pleasure-boat harbour with 250 permanent berths for pleasure boats. The harbour has visitor berths and service facilities and has been awarded the Blue Flag. Ferries from Havnsø travel to the protected island of Nekselø. A slipway makes it possible to launch and retrieve boats. At the beaches east and west of the harbour, you can swim in calm waters and enjoy views of Nekselø and Sejerø.

Eskebjerg Vesterlyng Beach is 5 kilometres long and characterised by white, stone-free sand. It is described as child-friendly, making it a clear point of reference for families who also want to plan beach days when choosing their holiday destination. Vesterlyng’s North Beach at car park 1 is also designated as an official Nordic bathing site. At Havnsø Harbour Bath, the facilities include winter bathing, a sauna and a playground. The association is based in a former wooden shipyard connected to the maritime surroundings of Havnsø Harbour.
