Bildsø between forest, beach and coastal paths

Bildsø combines a protected coastal landscape, a public forest and impressive traces of the Stone Age. The character of the area is shaped in particular by Bildsø Strand, Bildsø Skov and the paths along Musholm Bay.

Beach and forest as defining features of the landscape

Bildsø Strand is one of the beaches in Slagelse Municipality awarded the Blue Flag. At the same time, the beach is a protected area. Access is via Drøsselbjergvej to a car park at the north-eastern corner of Bildsø Skov. From there, a path leads through the forest to the beach. This access description is important for planning your day if you want to combine a stay by the water with a walk through the forest landscape.

Bildsø Skov was established on the coast in 1855 under difficult conditions. Today, it is a public forest extending to Musholm Bay and consisting of a mixture of deciduous and coniferous trees. In the surrounding area, paths lead to the beach and to viewpoints overlooking the bay. Bildsø Skov also offers opportunities for hiking and cycling along the coast. The forest also has a public exercise and fitness area with just under 20 training stations made of wood and stone. The Musholmleden is a 58-kilometre coastal hiking trail from Reersø to Korsør on the Great Belt. A particularly prominent section is located near Bildsø Skov. The trail is signposted, predominantly flat and runs along gravel roads, field paths and short paved sections. This gives the route clear orientation for anyone wishing to supplement their trip with a longer coastal hike. Near Bildsø Skov, the Musholmleden runs alongside a lush deciduous forest with abundant birdlife. The Sjællandsleden hiking trail also passes through the Bildsø Skov area.

The Musholmleden represents a longer connection between Reersø and Korsør, while the paths in Bildsø Skov lead to the beach, the bay and the viewpoints as destinations in their own right. Stone Age monuments in Bildsø

The area’s cultural history is also part of the Bildsø experience. Langhøj, mv., Bildsø (#1) is a protected Stone Age long barrow dating from 3950–2801 BC. Horsedysse is a protected Stone Age long dolmen in Bildsø. The monument measures 30 × 8 metres, is 1 metre high and has three chambers as well as around 50 kerbstones.

Rundhøj, mv., Bildsø (#3) is a round dolmen with a diameter of 8 metres and 23 kerbstones. At the same time, it is described as a Stone Age round barrow with a dolmen or passage grave dating from 3950–2801 BC. Anyone interested in early forms of construction and traces of past cultures can include these monuments in their travel plans as a peaceful counterpoint to the beach, forest and hiking trails.
