Jels – Discover Lakes, Trails and Culture

Jels combines a protected lake landscape with marked trails and surprisingly diverse cultural destinations. The lake system lies in a tunnel valley and consists of three interconnected lakes: Jels Nedersø, covering 54 hectares, Jels Midtsø, covering 25 hectares, and Jels Oversø, covering 9 hectares. Several clearly described routes are available for planning. The Barsbøl-turen is a 3.5-kilometre blue-marked hiking trail through Barsbøl Skov south of Jels Midtsø. The hiking trail around Jels Midtsø is 3.2 kilometres long and marked with yellow signs. These two details help you choose a suitable trail length without confusing the routes.

If you would like to plan a longer cycling tour, the Jels area offers a 17-kilometre Cykelrute along Jels Sø. It begins in the centre of Jels at Jels Mølle, where parking is also available. The Hærvejsruten runs through the forests north and south of Jels. Culture between mill, church and the Viking Age

Jels Mølle is a large Dutch gallery windmill built in 1859. Four floors, as well as the cap and the original machinery with millstones, hoist and grain hoppers, have been fully preserved. The mill has been listed since 1959. As the Cykelrute also begins here, this site combines a technical heritage monument with a practical point of orientation for cyclists.

Jels Kirke also offers historical details. It was built in 1854 as a successor to a smaller, somewhat dilapidated church made of hewn granite. Its furnishings include an originally Romanesque granite baptismal font that was adapted in 1854. The altarpiece consists of a plaster cast of Thorvaldsen’s relief of the institution of the Eucharist, which was originally created for Vor Frue Kirke in Copenhagen. Jels Voldsted is considered a possible site of a Viking fortress of considerable size. The area measures approximately 160 × 100 metres; the rampart is about 300 metres long, and the distance between the northern and southern boundaries is approximately 130 metres. Such measurements make the historical site tangible for visitors without presenting its presumed function as an established fact.

Another cultural highlight is Jels Vikingespil, an annual open-air theatre production that has been based on the commitment of several hundred volunteers since 1977. In everyday life, Planetarium Jels is not open as a planetarium, but is accessible only during events and similar occasions.
