Those who learn about Sædding through the history of its farms will encounter specific names and dates spanning long periods. The place is documented under the name Sythingsholm in 1329; a photograph dated 17 June 1946 shows Sædding Storgaard as a farm. In between, we come across the names of farms and residents, as well as dated transitions. These traces give the history of the area a tangible framework: different farms, name associations and stages of life shape the way we see Sædding. If you enjoy piecing together individual dates to form a story, the area offers an engaging way to explore its history.

Place names and regional farm history

The name Møikær is documented for a farm in Sædding in 1796. The farm Møkær was named after the moor where it stood. The regional context also places the area within a wider setting: the villages of Houstrup, Nørre Nebel, Sædding, Grærup and Lydumhede were located in the northwestern part of the Varde area. Twelve farms are recorded for Sædding, giving the regional context a concrete scale.

Sædding Storgård and the Barfod family

Sædding Storgård brings together several points in time. The former Sædding Storgård probably served as the ancestral home of the Barfod family in Sædding. Jens Barfod from Sædding was raised to the nobility in 1455. In 1486, another Jens Barfod is again associated with Sædding; Peder and Thomas Barfod are mentioned in 1592 and 1626. In 1654, Eske Hansen lived in the half of the farm in Store Sædding known as Storgård. In 1768, Sædding Storgård, with 4½ tonnes of hartkorn, was transferred from U. A. Trappaud to Mourids Jepsen. The focus thus shifts from a family connection to the residents of one half of a farm and then to a dated transfer.

Riddersholm and Vadgården

Riddersholm is another of Sædding’s farms. In 1720, the purchase price for Riddersholm was 90 Rigsdaler; around 1800, Jørgen Lauridsen took over Riddersholm. Its history can therefore be read as a separate thread alongside the accounts of Sædding Storgård.

Vadgården offers another link between farm and family names: Peder Christensen Vad was the tenant farmer there in 1760. The Wad family took its name from Sædding Vadgård, also known as Sædding Vad. The history of the area thus stretches from individual farm names to a family name explicitly associated with a farm.
