Beach paths, cycling and bathing areas
Lakolk Beach has been awarded the Blue Flag. If this status is important to you, check it again before your trip. The firm sand is suitable for cycling, and there are shallow bathing areas on the beach. A 9 km stretch of beach between Lakolk and Sønderstrand is car-free and ideal for walking. Visitors can park close to the sea along a 2 km stretch of coast at Lakolk Beach.
Cars are subject to a speed limit of 30 km/h on parts of Lakolk Beach; drivers must watch out for bathers and pedestrians. This information comes from a police notice dated 16 July 2026. Local signs take precedence, and traffic rules may change. Naturstyrelsen does not issue permits for wind-powered vehicles to be driven in Lakolk on Rømø; check the current rules before your visit. Windsurfers can be found on the northern part of Lakolk Beach.
Toilet facilities at the beach are also seasonal: temporary toilets are installed there from mid-April to early September. Public toilets with facilities for people with disabilities are available in the Lakolk shopping centre. If accessibility is essential for your visit, check availability locally.
Birdwatching and nature conditions
Lakolk Sø is a birdwatching spot, with a good view of the lake from the path. Species that breed in the area include bitterns, marsh harriers, bearded reedlings and water rails. Which species are present can vary from season to season and from year to year. Access to Lakolk Sø is prohibited during the breeding season. Follow the current local signs and notices.
Dog owners can use a dog exercise area west of the campsite in Lakolk. Dogs are allowed to run free there all year round. Please also observe the local signs.
Seaside resort history and special experiences
The establishment of the Lakolk seaside resort on Rømø in 1898 marked the beginning of tourism on Rømø and throughout North Schleswig. At the time, 37 log cabins were built for the North Sea resort. An inventory updated on 25 February 2020 recorded that 22 of them remained. The island’s later development is also significant to its history: tourism on Rømø picked up again after the Rømø Dam opened in 1948.
Another beach event is the Rømø Kite Festival, held at Lakolk Beach and featuring thousands of kites. As event dates and format may change, check the latest details if you would like to plan your visit around it.
Planning your stay
When searching for a holiday rental in Lakolk, you can start by considering which focus best suits your stay: at the beach, walking, cycling on firm sand and shallow bathing areas go hand in hand; when birdwatching by the lake, the seasonal access restriction must be taken into account. The two experiences therefore differ not only in the activities, but also in their conditions.
