Mariager – Old Town, Roses and Fjord Experiences

Mariager combines a historic atmosphere with a wide range of experiences along the Mariager Fjord. Cobbled streets and old half-timbered houses decorated with roses characterize the old town. Discover historic Mariager

Mariager Church and Abbey are important cultural points of reference. They are the remains of a medieval Bridgettine convent founded around 1446 and dissolved with the introduction of the Reformation in 1536. At the Mariager Museum, an exhibition explores the history of Mariager Abbey from around 1430 to 1536 in greater depth. Anyone interested in churches and historic interiors can also take note of the organ in Mariager Church: it was installed and fully voiced in spring 2010.

The historic townscape can easily be combined with other cultural impressions. The roses in front of the half-timbered houses give the old town its own character, while the remains of the abbey reveal a much older layer of the town’s history. This creates an outing in which not only individual buildings but also Mariager’s development as a whole can take centre stage.

Hiking, Fjord Views and a Train Ride

The Mariager Ruten is a varied and scenic urban hiking route through the historic areas of Mariager. It is marked with yellow triangles to help with orientation. The section along the fjord may be flooded on certain days, so you should take this into account when planning your day. In 2024, the route was certified as a Premium Urban Hiking Trail by the German Hiking Institute. It was the first route in Denmark to receive this certification.

Hohøj offers another perspective on the landscape. The Bronze Age burial mound is approximately 12 metres high and around 72 metres in diameter. From there, you can enjoy a wide view over the Mariager Fjord and the surrounding hilly landscape. For a more relaxed excursion, the Svanen offers trips from Mariager with views across the Mariager Fjord and the surrounding landscape.

The Mariager-Handest veteran railway also offers a special way to experience the surroundings. The journey is 17 kilometres long and passes through fjord landscapes, small-town scenery, beech forest, gentle hills, heathland and river valleys. A return journey takes 45 minutes each way. This makes it possible to plan an excursion combining landscape viewing with railway history.

Roses, Salt and Water Experiences

The Mariager Rose Garden is a 2,000-square-metre rosarium with 22 themed gardens. It contains 400 different varieties of roses growing on around 800 plants. The garden is therefore an attraction in its own right for anyone who wants to include a quieter part of the day while discovering a variety of garden areas.

At the Mariager Salt Centre, salt takes centre stage. The Dead Sea experience offers a saltwater bath at approximately 39°C, with strong buoyancy that allows you to float. The salt exhibition explores the geology, history and chemistry of salt, as well as its importance, through films, props and experiments. At the Sydehytten, Mariager Sydesalt is produced by hand from seawater that is around 260 million years old. These attractions give the town a distinctive thematic profile.

During the summer season, Mariager Water Park is located approximately 120 metres off Mariager’s sandy beach in the Mariager Fjord. The water attraction includes a slide, trampolines and tunnels.
