Uggerby: Beach, Dune Plantation and the Uggerby Å
Accommodation in Uggerby
Uggerby brings together coastal scenery, forest paths, a river and village history. White sand and plenty of space define Uggerby Beach, while paths, cycling routes and a tall observation tower are the highlights of Uggerby Dune Plantation. The Uggerby Å is both a distinctive natural feature and a place for canoe trips. If you’re looking for a holiday rental in Uggerby, these different sides of the area can help you choose what to focus on during your holiday.
Beach and changing wetlands
Uggerby Beach is a white, child-friendly sandy beach with plenty of space. Facilities include toilets, drinking water, an information board, a bathing water flag, a monitoring station, and first-aid and rescue equipment. This gives you practical guidance for a day at the beach, while reminding you that the sandy shore is not the only natural feature in the area.
East of the access road to Uggerby Beach, groundwater emerges to form a beach lake and small wetlands. Their size changes depending on rainfall. The area provides good conditions for plants, insects and wading birds. Alongside the open beach, you can also explore smaller water-shaped habitats. If you enjoy experiencing different landscapes on holiday, you’ll find a contrast here between sandy beach and wetland.
Paths through the dune plantation
Uggerby Plantation covers the entire Uggerby Dune. To the south, it borders agricultural land, and to the east, the Uggerby Å. Some of Denmark’s oldest Nordmann firs grow along the river. This distinctive stand of trees gives the woodland a special character, as well as its paths.
The North Sea Trail passes through Uggerby Dune Plantation and crosses the Uggerby Å. The plantation has paths, good cycling routes and a tall observation tower. From the car park on Tolstrupvej and the Vestkystruten, a national cycle route, there are good opportunities to walk into the eastern part of the dune plantation. This means you can plan for both walking and cycling during your holiday, while treating them as different kinds of outings.
The Uggerby Å as a river and canoe route
The Uggerby Å is 66 kilometres long and flows into Tannis Bugt west of Tversted. The river is suitable for canoe trips along a route of almost 50 kilometres, from the village of Ilbro to its mouth. That’s a different scale from a walk through the dune plantation: if you’re planning a canoe trip, you can make this longer route a distinct focus of your travel plans. Details about rentals and operations may vary.
The river mouth and surrounding area, together with large parts of Uggerby Dune Plantation, are protected as particularly valuable natural areas under the EU Natura 2000 project. The river, plantation and mouth are not interchangeable outing spots: the protection designation covers the mouth and its surroundings, as well as large parts of the plantation.
The church and local history
Uggerby Church stands among trees on the edge of the village and is visible from the main road that passes by. Its bells also tell a specific story: they date from 1473 and were recast in 1917 because they had developed cracks. If you’re interested in historical details as well as the beach and nature, the church offers another point of interest in the village.
When looking for a holiday rental in Uggerby, consider what you’d most like your holiday to include: time at the child-friendly beach, paths and cycling routes in the dune plantation, the canoe route on the Uggerby Å, or an interest in history.
