Bindslev brings together technological history, distinctive buildings and crafts. The fish ladder adds a seasonal opportunity to observe nature, while the Uggerby Å offers its own perspective on canoeing and fishing. This means exploring the town and enjoying the river are separate focal points. As you plan your trip, consider whether you mainly want to explore architectural and cultural history or include activities on the water.

Hydropower, Fish Ladder and Nature Watching

The Bindslev Old Hydroelectric Station is Denmark’s last hydroelectric direct-current power station and possibly the last in Europe. This gives Bindslev a clearly defined technological theme: hydropower and direct current are part of the town’s history.

The fish ladder in Bindslev was built from fieldstones in 1976. During migration periods, visitors can watch fish leap from pool to pool. If you want to experience this natural spectacle, plan your visit for a migration period. The contrast between the stone structure and the moving fish brings together architectural history and a vivid moment in nature.

There is a picnic area with tables and benches at the fish ladder site. The Naturlejrplads v/Bindslev is close to the old power station and the fish ladder, and has four shelters. If you plan to use the shelters, check their availability before you arrive.

Church, Crafts and Local History

Bindslev Church is a stately Late Romanesque brick church. It provides a different focus from the history of technology and water engineering: here, the emphasis is on a single building.

The location of the Bindslev Crafts Museum also helps place it in context: it is housed in A.C. Jakobsen’s former carpentry workshop at Mosbjergvej 3B and displays more than 20 traditional crafts and over 4,000 objects. The former workshop links the collection to a specific place of craft; the wide range of topics and objects gives the museum its own focus within the town’s history.

The history of local events also includes a clear historical turning point: the Bindslev New Music Festival was founded on 5 December 2019, after the Bindslev Accordion Festival was held for the last time in 2019.

Uggerby Å: Canoeing or Fishing

Canoeing on the Uggerby Å is possible from Ilbro, southeast of Hjørring, to the river’s mouth, along a route of just under 50 kilometres. The river offers a different focus for anglers: you can catch brown trout, sea trout, roach and pike there.

The two activities appeal to different interests. If you’re looking for a point-to-point trip, there is a clearly defined canoe route; if you’re interested in fishing, the four named fish species offer another point of reference. Ilbro as the starting point, the river’s mouth as the destination and the route length provide key details for planning your trip.

Choose a Holiday Apartment to Suit Your Interests

When looking for a holiday apartment in Bindslev, first consider what you want to focus on during your stay: local history centred on the power station, fish ladder, church and museum, or activities on the Uggerby Å as well. If you plan to include the canoe route, factor Ilbro, the river’s mouth and the distance of just under 50 kilometres into your plans.
