Discover Strandby: Beach, Harbour and Nature

Strandby combines a designated bathing beach with fishing history, nature experiences and paths that allow you to get to know the area from different perspectives. When choosing your accommodation, it is therefore important to consider whether you mainly want to swim, fish, hike, discover historical traces or observe life at the harbour.

Beaches and nature around Strandby

Strandby Nordstrand is an east-facing bathing beach and is designated as a bathing area. North and south of Strandby there are also white, family-friendly beaches with sand dunes. At Strandby Beach, there are toilets on the way from Nørrevej and a long ramp providing access for pushchairs and wheelchairs. The beach on the northern harbour shore has Blue Flag status.

At Strandby Nord, the Natura 2000 site begins 200 metres north of the beach. The route through Bannerslund Skov offers a special perspective on the surroundings: it includes a birdwatching tower with views of Hirsholmene and the area’s rich birdlife. Strandby Marina also has a viewing tower. Binoculars are available there, and the view extends to Hirsholmene and Læsø.

Strandby-stien, the old town and historical traces

Strandby-stien is approximately 7 km long. You can begin the route at the car park near the “Hundeskoven” in Bannerslund, at the railway station or at the harbour. Along the route, information boards provide stories from Strandby. At Elling Å, the path passes the site where ships from the Iron Age were found.

You will encounter another story on Strandby-stien with the “Strandby Treasure”: in 2012, two young men found a treasure containing coins and other objects from the Viking Age. If you prefer to explore the town as a cohesive historic district, you can discover Strandby’s old town on a walking tour. This allows you to combine exercise and local history without devoting the day exclusively to a single experience.

The harbour also tells the story of Strandby’s development. It was inaugurated in 1896. From the 1920s to the 1950s, numerous cutters from Strandby fished in the North Sea and landed their catches in Grimsby and Hull on England’s east coast. This historic connection adds a maritime past to the harbour’s present-day character.

Fishing and fishing culture

Strandby offers anglers various opportunities. Sea trout fishing is possible seasonally at the reef north of Strandby Nord. From the harbour shore, you can cast into deeper water without a boat and fish for, among other species, cod, saithe, sea trout, mackerel, herring, plaice and garfish.

Strandby Fiskeauktion is one of the few remaining fish auctions on the east coast. Visitors can see many different species of fish and shellfish there. In the harbour, fresh fish and fresh shellfish are sold directly from the fishing boats, in the fish houses or at the auction held every morning at 7:00 a.m.

Those who want to combine days at the beach with nature experiences can use the beaches and Strandby-stien as their reference points. For fishing and fishing culture, the harbour becomes the focal point. If you arrive by train or bus, also bear in mind that train and bus connections are reachable within five minutes from Strandby Marina. Strandby Station is a small, unstaffed stop with bicycle parking and easy access to the platforms.
