Holiday apartment in Viborg Municipality: Nature, trails and culture

Viborg Municipality combines impressive nature with deep historical traces and diverse trails. The Mønsted-Daugbjerg limestone quarries area is particularly distinctive: it is considered one of Europe’s most important wintering grounds for bats. More than 12,000 bats from five species spend the winter there. There is also much to discover underground, as the Mønsted Kalkgruber and Daugbjerg Kalkgruber have several kilometres of open mine passages that visitors can explore.

Nature

The area around Hald Sø is designated a national geological area of interest and is of international importance. Viborg Nature Park consists of several natural areas around Viborg and does not form one contiguous park. As a result, the landscape takes different forms: in Viborg Municipality, there are nature experiences at fjords, lakes and rivers, as well as in heathlands, forests and parks.

At Birkesø, a marked 2.5-kilometre hiking route leads through a landscape of lake and heathland and offers views of the Jordbro Ådal valley. At the northern end of Birkesø, there is also a sandy beach and a public bathing area. In total, Viborg Municipality has 14 bathing areas at lakes and along the fjord. Trails and water

Himmerlandsstien is a scenic route between Viborg and Hvam. Along the route, there are accessible rest areas, fire pits and fire shelters. In some places, overnight stays are possible in shelters or camping areas; drinking water and toilets are available at selected locations. The Kjællinghøl Tour is a relaxing circular route between Bjerringbro and Kjællinghøl via the Kjællinghøl Bridge. Trækstien is an original hiking trail along the Gudenå with diverse nature experiences.

Arnbjergruten is a 4.9-kilometre combined hiking and cycling route between Søndersø and the new Arnbjerg district. The Vandmølleruten offers another combination of landscape and history. It passes three former watermills: Søndermølle, Bruunshaab Gl. Papfabrik and Rindsholm Mølle. All three were significant mill operations powered by water. Kalk Kaminoen is a hiking route through the large heathlands of Central Jutland, through Kongenshus Mindepark and past Mønsted Kalkgruber.

History and culture

At Hvolris Jernalder, archaeological excavations lie directly next to a reconstructed Iron Age village. During the summer and autumn holidays, it offers living Iron Age experiences in which families live in the village according to Iron Age ways of life. De fem Halder presents 800 years of power and political history from the Middle Ages through the Reformation to the modern era. Walks lead through the landscape with renovated ruins and a Baroque garden; there is also a family treasure hunt, an exhibition and a historic playground.

Vingaards Officin combines a printing museum with a functioning workshop. The building is dedicated to the more than 500-year history of book printing and practical graphic printing techniques. Energimuseet is Denmark’s experience and educational centre for energy, future energy solutions and the green transformation. Viborg Kunsthal presents changing exhibitions by Danish and international visual artists. Accompanying events include artist talks, lectures, concerts and workshops.

City and trails

Domkirkekvarteret has a self-guided historical route accessible via Storyhunt in a browser or in the app. The route comprises 10 stations and provides an insight into the 1,000-year history of the quarter. Viborg Cathedral was originally built in the Romanesque style in the 12th to 13th centuries. Its crypt is the oldest part of the cathedral and dates back almost 900 years.

Skovgaard Museet displays Danish Golden Age art and modern contemporary art, particularly works by Joakim Skovgaard and his family. From Viborg Station, the museum can be reached on foot via the pedestrian zone in about 10 minutes. City buses serve routes within the city and the surrounding area. They are yellow and have single-digit route numbers, such as route 1.
