Skanderborg between lake, forest and culture

Skanderborg combines a varied lake landscape with forest trails, culture and active experiences. Around Lake Skanderborg, paths lead through areas of special natural beauty, while museums, historic churches and recurring events add their own distinctive touches. This allows you to tailor your stay to your interests with short walks, longer excursions, water sports or a cultural programme.

Hiking trails between lake and forest

The Dyrehaveruten runs along Lake Skanderborg, passing reeds and a swamp forest on the old lakebed. Marked in yellow, the circular trail covers 3.1 kilometres and passes through areas with old beech trees. If you would like to include a manageable route in your day’s plans, there are marked hiking trails around Svanesø measuring approximately 3 kilometres. There is also a birdwatching tower near the lake, offering views across the entire Svanesø and its diverse birdlife.

Another option is Skovturen, a marked route through Dyrehaven. It runs across mostly flat terrain on gravel paths suitable for prams, wheelchairs and people with reduced mobility. Along the way, the route passes the disc golf course in Dyrehaven. The Skanderborg Trail Center also supports hiking on forest trails and features an MTB launch ramp integrated into the roof, as well as a skills course for mountain biking and gravel riding. This makes it possible to combine peaceful nature experiences and sporting activities in different ways.

Water activities and excursions on the lake

Bybadet is a multifunctional area that is open to everyone all year round. It has facilities for canoeing, kayaking and SUP. Those who would rather experience Lake Skanderborg on a boat trip can sail on the M/S Dagmar from May to the end of September. The pleasant trip lasts approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, departs from Bybadet, Parkvej 10, 8660 Skanderborg, and is supplemented by special events. During the trips, loudspeakers provide information about the history of the surrounding area.

A cycling tour around Lake Skanderborg also offers numerous experiences. A holiday apartment or holiday home in Skanderborg provides a suitable base for planning your own days, without every day of your holiday having to look the same.

Historic sites and cultural impressions

Skanderborg Bunkerne, a department of Museum Skanderborg, conveys the traces of the German Luftwaffe’s Danish headquarters. Skanderborg Slotskirke offers a different historical perspective: it is the last surviving part of the east wing that Frederik II added to Skanderborg Castle between 1562 and 1571. Beneath the Slotskirke, the old castle cellar has been arranged as a crypt.

Skanderup Kirke also tells of the area’s long history. Built around 1150 from travertine, the church is a Romanesque structure. Families and those interested in culture can also enjoy the annual events: the Smukfest music festival takes place every August in Dyrehaven in Skanderborg, and in May, Skanderborg hosts a children’s book fair in honour of children’s author Ole Lund Kirkegaard. Kulturhuset houses a cinema, a library and a café; a lakeside swimming facility is also planned there soon.
