Kolby: Windmill, Church and Historic Discoveries

Windmill and Village History

Kolby Mølle stands on the road between Kolby Kås and Kolby. It is Samsø’s only Dutch windmill. It was built in 1859 in Søbyvad near Hammel and moved to Samsø in 1899. Kolby Mølle can still be visited. Visitors can examine the intricate wooden structures that once powered the large millstones. This visible mechanism in particular makes the site an informative stop for travellers who want to discover history not only through dates, but through a tangible building.

It is open when staff are present at the cemetery; normally, this is the case from Monday to Thursday from 10:00 to 15:30 and on Fridays from 10:00 to 11:45. You should take this condition and the stated opening times into account when planning your day.

Several special details are described inside. On the north side of the chancel arch, the church has a stairway from the chancel with an opening towards the nave. It is probably a pulpit or lectern from the Catholic period. On the west side of the tower room, a fresco from 1558 can also be seen. It depicts Saint George killing the dragon to save Cleodolinde. Woodland, Cycling Route and Vesborg Lighthouse

In the surrounding area, walkers and cyclists may use the paths and roads in the private Brattingsborg Forest every day from 6:00 until sunset. The powder magazine at Vesborg Lighthouse houses a small exhibition about Samsø’s five medieval castle complexes, of which Vesborg is the largest. Around the lighthouse, the view stretches across the Samsø Belt towards Funen, Zealand and Jutland.
