History and culture in Grenå

A good starting point for the history of the region is Museum Østjylland Grenaa. The permanent exhibition covers the history of Norddjursland over a period of 10,000 years and is complemented by digital installations. The accessible section is currently only partially open: visitors can see the special exhibition Væk med Skidtet and the reopened permanent exhibition areas Jorden and Kalken.

Grenå’s history can also be discovered in various ways outside the museum. The Lydvandring i August Kroghs fodspor follows August Krogh’s upbringing in Grenå in the late 19th century across seven stations. In Grenaa Plantage, the Hjemstavn-Podwalk invites you to scan a QR code and hear voices from the region while walking. Grenaa Church was built around 1300 from bricks. Baunhøj Mølle Grenaa presents changing art exhibitions, while Kulturhuset Pavillonen offers theatre, musicals, comedy, visual art and live music.

Nederstræde, a side street off Lillegade with idyllic, well-preserved half-timbered houses, is ideal for a short town walk. This allows you to arrange the cultural part of your stay individually, without limiting it to a single exhibition visit.

Nature, trails and water activities

The Grenaa Å is a watercourse approximately 7 kilometres long that runs through Grenå and flows into the Kattegat at Grenaa Harbour. Canoeists can paddle from the town centre at Gasværksvej to Enslevgården. The Kløverstier trails lead through the town’s streets and lanes, along the Grenaaen river, through the plantation and into the open landscape at the tip of Djursland. Grenaa Naturskole also organises public tours throughout the year.

Beach, harbour and maritime excursions

Grenaa Beach received the Blue Flag in 2026. The calm water conditions are suitable for children, surfers and SUP enthusiasts; the shallow inner area is considered particularly suitable for SUP. At Grenaa Marina, service buildings with showers and toilets as well as a coin-operated laundry are available. Ferries depart daily from Grenaa Harbour to Anholt and Halmstad in Sweden.

For families, Kattegatcentret offers another weather-independent way to discover the marine world. It is home to 200 different animal species from around the world. Training and feeding of the sharks take place daily in the tropical shark tank. Those travelling with children can combine this visit with the nature playground in the plantation or a stay at peaceful Grenaa Beach.
