Holiday apartment in Lemvig Municipality – discover nature, culture and the coast

Lemvig Municipality combines the landscape of West Jutland with unusual nature experiences, marked trails, museums and places on the North Sea and the Limfjord. Between Lemvig, Thyborøn and the smaller towns are destinations where history, wildlife, outdoor activities and regional culture come together in different ways.

Staffed tourist information services are available at Lemvig Library and at Iskunsten in Thyborøn; various brochures are available there. Midtjyske Jernbaner also operates the 57-kilometre railway line between Vemb, Lemvig and Thyborøn.

Trails and routes

Lemvig Municipality has published a brochure with ten walking and hiking routes in the town of Lemvig. It contains detailed maps as well as overview maps of all public paths in the town. A special route concept is offered by Planetstien: The marked hiking trail is 12 kilometres long and includes shorter options to Saturn and Neptune. On Planetstien, the solar system is represented at a scale of one to one billion.

For a short route, there is Sundhedssporet. It is 1,350 metres long and largely flat; the route can be walked in about 15 minutes or run in approximately 7 to 10 minutes, depending on fitness. Various distances are also available by bicycle. A 50-kilometre mountain bike route runs through Klosterheden Plantage, half of which consists of single trails. It can be shortened, for example to a 34-kilometre western section or an eastern section of approximately 28 kilometres. The 44-kilometre panoramic cycle route “Himmel, hav og kunst” runs along country roads, gravel roads and paths and is signposted throughout as “409 Panoramarute”.

Nature

Klosterheden Plantage is characterised by its wildlife. It is home to Denmark’s largest beaver population, with just under 200 animals; 18 animals were released there in 1999. The plantation also hosts one of Denmark’s largest red deer populations. In the same landscape lies Kjærgaard Mølle, a historic watermill on Bredkær Bæk.

Naturrum Thyborøn has two hiking trails, 4 and 11 kilometres long respectively. Information boards along the way provide interesting facts about nature and culture. The 11-kilometre trail passes a birdwatching hide from which waterfowl, waders and birds of prey can be observed.

Culture

At Lemvig Museum, the exhibition on the history of the merchant town covers Lemvig’s history from the Middle Ages to the present day. The exhibition “Vestjylland og verden” uses objects to show the connections between the Lemvig region and the rest of the world in the 18th and 19th centuries. The museum also features Henning Gantriis’ universe from the well-known comic series “Livets gang i Lidenlund”, which is set in Lemvig.

Several historic sites complement the museum offerings. Bovbjerg Fyr was first put into operation as a lighthouse in 1877. The approximately 500-year-old Aa-Mølle is a listed watermill in a moraine-edge area on elevated seabed from the Ice Age near Nissum Bredning. Iskunsten is a permanent exhibition venue for ice sculptures and ice art, open year-round; the exhibition themes, and therefore the ice sculptures as well, change several times a year. Nr. Nissum Håndbryg offers brewing courses with brewmaster Jens Grøn as well as beer tastings.

Coast and water

Bovbjerg Fyr is located near the edge of the 41-metre-high Bovbjergklint and offers beautiful views over the North Sea. The lighthouse also hosts art exhibitions, talks, communal meals and hikes. On the water, the dolphin safari operated by JyllandsAkvariet heads into the Thyborøn Channel, where the North Sea meets the Limfjord.

At JyllandsAkvariet, visitors can touch sharks in the touch pools, stroke rays along their backs and hold crabs in their hands. JyllandsAkvariet also offers boat safaris for observing seals and dolphins.
