Hovedgård reveals its character in many different ways: The town developed as a railway town, has preserved buildings from its early development and is home to Tornbjerg, a wooded hill in the centre. There is also an open-air swimming pool and nearby Ørridslev Church, with its frescoes. You can get to know Hovedgård through its local history, landscape and specific places to visit.

Traces of the railway town

Hovedgård developed as a railway town around the station, built in 1868, and the East Jutland main line from Padborg to Frederikshavn. Its history is also reflected in the streets and buildings that preserve early forms of the town’s development. Hovedgård’s distinctive triangular merchant’s courtyard has been preserved at the corner of Horsensvej and Stationspladsen. Its unusual shape gives the townscape a character of its own.

Østergade and Nørregade preserve elements from the earliest development of Hovedgård as a railway town. These include several homes in the Bedre Byggeskik style. Vestergade offers another glimpse of life in the town at the time: low buildings along the street and workshop buildings in the backyards have been preserved, reflecting the former small-scale businesses. Homes and workshops reveal different aspects of the early railway town, rather than reducing its history to the station alone.

Tornbjerg and finding your way around town

Tornbjerg is a wooded hill in the centre of Hovedgård. The town also stretches between Tornbjerg and the railway into the surrounding countryside. The woodland and the railway thus provide two distinct points of reference for understanding Hovedgård’s character: the central hill on the one hand, and its history as a railway town on the other.

The car park on Stationsvej is east of Tornbjerg Forest. Nearby, there is a small square with play equipment, a shelter and a covered fire-pit area. The Hovedgård Citizens’ Association manages the square. Shelter Hovedgård is at the end of Skolebakken and can be reached via the path from the town’s green space. These specific locations can help you plan your way around if you would like to include the landscape and local facilities in your holiday plans.

Sports hall, open-air pool and nearby church

Hovedgård Friluftsbad is an open-air swimming pool at Fruenshave 7 in Hovedgård. Hovedgård Hallen was founded in 1970 by local volunteers and associations. Its distinctive, sloping roof makes it particularly suitable for music. Its history and architecture give the hall a character of its own, while the open-air pool is another specific local landmark.

A different historical story awaits near Hovedgård: Ørridslev Church stands among the fields. It was built in the first half of the 12th century and is known for its well-preserved frescoes, which are among the oldest in Denmark. The history of Hovedgård as a railway town and the early building history of the nearby church thus offer two distinctly different historical perspectives.

Choose the focus that suits your stay

When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Hovedgård, you can consider which of these perspectives you would like to shape your holiday. The preserved buildings and streets draw attention to the town’s development as a railway town; Tornbjerg brings its landscape into view; and nearby Ørridslev Church adds architectural history and frescoes to the mix.
