Kongens Lyngby: Culture, Lakes and the Mølleåen
Kongens Lyngby combines a remarkable cultural landscape with lakes, waterways and experiences for different age groups. Historic buildings, preserved townscapes and paths along the water give your trip a variety of focal points. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, you can therefore first decide whether you primarily want to focus on cultural history, walks, boat trips or shared discoveries with children.
Historic places and vibrant culture
One particularly vivid way to explore the history is through Bondebyen. The area is considered one of the best-preserved villages north of Copenhagen and consists of farmsteads and smaller houses. At the same time, Bondebyen reflects the character of a workers’ residential area from the 1890s, established in former agricultural buildings. Lindegaarden is a four-winged farmstead dating from 1650 and is now a cultural venue in the centre of Kongens Lyngby.
Handelsruten also directs attention to the development of the town centre. It tells the story of Kongens Lyngby and highlights selected houses and shops along Lyngby Hovedgade from the past and present. Lyngby Church dates from the 12th century and is the oldest building in Kongens Lyngby. Inside are frescoes from around 1500, created by the Brarup workshop. Anyone interested in older buildings and sacred art can take this aspect into account when planning their day without making the trip revolve around a single theme.
Further historic sites complete the picture: Frieboeshvile was built in 1756–58 as a country residence for summer stays. Sophienholm is a country residence dating from 1790 and serves as an art gallery with themed exhibitions and events. Nordre Mølle is a watermill established around 1762 as an extension of Søndre Mølle. Today, it is used as an exhibition venue for art exhibitions and Christmas markets. Lindegaardkoncerter presents concerts several times a year, on several Fridays.
Lakes, river and paths for active days
For walks, the Hjertestien makes it possible to walk all the way around Lyngby Lake. The lower section of the Mølleåstien follows Lyngby Lake and Lyngby Åmose before continuing along Lyngby Hovedgade. These two paths described above have different emphases: one focuses on the loop around the lake, while the other connects the lake, Åmose and the streetscape. Brede Værk is a preserved industrial heritage site on the Mølleåen River and offers guided tours to the public.
From May to September, Baadfarten offers leisurely boat trips on Lyngby Lake, the Mølleåen and Bagsværd Lake. This provides another way to experience the waterscape if you do not want to spend your entire trip on foot. When choosing your accommodation, it is useful to consider your preferred daily rhythm: those interested in culture tend to plan around historic sites and exhibitions, while walks and seasonal boat trips create a different focus.
Discoveries for children and adults
The Car Museum at Classic Car House offers interactive installations for children and adults. At the Open-Air Museum, visitors can see houses, farmsteads and mills from 350 years of history. Depending on the season, some animals can be encountered and petted there; Frøsnapperbyen also includes a maze. Frieboeshvile Stadsarkiv regularly organises exhibitions, talks, town walks, as well as activities and workshops for children. This makes it possible to enjoy a varied stay combining historical themes, exercise and playful discoveries.
When looking for accommodation in Kongens Lyngby, you can therefore use your preferred mix of local history, water and family activities as a guide. A holiday apartment or holiday home should above all suit the experiences you actually plan to include during your stay. For further destinations in the same selection, you can also discover Tisvildeleje, Vellerup, Smidstrup, Jægerspris, Dragør, Ishøj Municipality, Melby and Albertslund Municipality.
