Troense: Maritime Town, Harbour and Trails on Tåsinge
Troense combines the history of a well-preserved maritime town with trails through a cultural landscape, harbour life and a vibrant fruit-growing tradition. The town is located on a headland in the eastern part of Tåsinge, overlooking the Thurøsund. This gives Troense various starting points for planning your trip: You can explore historic houses, choose a trail, include the harbour or learn about the town’s special apple tradition in October.
A maritime town with a distinctive character
Troense was founded in the 18th century on the initiative of Chamberlain Niels Juel at Valdemars Slot. This historic setting is particularly well preserved in Grønnegade. Visitors can stroll between well-preserved, listed half-timbered houses and experience the character of the former maritime town directly in the streetscape. Behind the buildings along Grønnegade, apple orchards still extend across the narrow plots – a detail that makes the connection between local history and agriculture visible.
The town’s former working life is also part of Troense’s character. Troense’s last shipyard, Troense Træskibsværft, was located at Jacobsens Plads. It operated from 1848 to 1985 and is the only surviving shipbuilding site from the region’s earlier period of numerous wooden shipyards. The old school in Troense was opened in 1790 for the children of the local seafaring community. The listed building, with a registered preservation declaration, is located at Strandgade 001.
Trails between the town, landscape and Valdemars Slot
For a walk, you can follow Badstuestien. The trail leads from Badstuen to Grønnegade and can then be continued via Præstealléen and Slotsalléen to Valdemars Slot. If you would like to include a longer route in your day’s plans, the 26-kilometre stage of Øhavsstien offers a route that passes through the fruit-growing and maritime town of Troense.
Badstuejorden near Troense on Tåsinge is a 12-hectare area placed under protection in 1993. It connects the old maritime town with the agricultural land around Valdemars Slot. Another way to experience Tåsinge is a guided bicycle tour of approximately two hours to historic oak trees. This also includes an oak tree at Stæreodden in Troense. Depending on your preferred day of travel, you can therefore choose between local history, a longer hiking stage and a guided bicycle tour.
Harbour, boat trips and fruit-growing tradition
Troense Harbour is situated in a scenic bend of the eastern Svendborg Sound. Visitors can rent bicycles from the harbourmaster at Troense Harbour. The harbour is also only a few steps from the landing stage for the M/S Helge. A boat trip takes approximately two hours and travels through the Svendborg Sound along the coasts of southern Funen.
Fruit growing in Troense can be traced back to the middle of the 18th century. At that time, Niels Juel established a nursery at Valdemars Slot. The apple and fruit-growing tradition is celebrated every year in October at Æbleræs, an event honouring Troense’s maritime and agricultural history. Old wooden ships from throughout the archipelago are loaded with apples from the gardens of Troense, sail from Troense Harbour to Svendborg Harbour and sell the apples directly from the sides of the ships.
