Ballen combines beach, harbour, coastal landscapes and special nature experiences. Ballen Beach is located next to Ballen Harbour; immediately behind the beach, there is parking at the harbour on an open grass area. This is where orientation begins, in a place where maritime impressions and excursions into the landscape are closely connected to the history of the town.

Harbour, Beach and Maritime Impressions

Historically, Ballen served as a shipping port. Today, Ballen Åhavn is one of the defining features: the well-preserved river harbour is located at the mouth of the Syltemade Å. Ballen Marina is situated directly east of the mouth of the Syltemade Å. Those interested in harbour facilities, coastal towns and the history of goods and ferry traffic will find different facets of the town here.

There is also an exceptional destination beneath the water near Ballen. Wreck diving at the sunken ferry Ærøsund is possible from the coast near Ballen. Near Ballen Harbour, divers use the wreck of the M/F Ærøsund as an artificial reef. This special feature also makes Ballen interesting for travellers who do not want to spend their days by the water only on the beach.

Syltemade Valley and the Archipelago Trail

West of Ballen Harbour, the Syltemade Å flows through grazed meadows and natural areas. The Syltemade Valley is located near Ballen; it is a 20-metre-deep erosion valley formed by meltwater. The southern half of the valley is protected and can be reached on foot from a car park on Langegyde road. West of the mouth lies a small coastal cliff made of grey and brown moraine clay.

The surrounding area offers several specific starting points for walks. A 4.5-kilometre marked section of the Archipelago Trail runs through the Syltemade Valley. From Ballen Harbour, it is also possible to walk along part of the Archipelago Trail through Syltemae Valley. In the area around Ballen, the trail passes through the protected coastal forest of Præstens Skov. This allows you to choose between a marked route through the valley, a walk from the harbour and a path through the forest when planning your day, without having to experience everything in the same way.

Cultural Landscape and Local History

The cultural landscape of Ø. Skerninge and Ballen was created through the land reforms at the end of the 18th century. Together with the meadows, natural areas and historic harbour sites, it demonstrates how closely the landscape and its use are connected. Ballen was first mentioned in 1551 under the name „Skerningballe“. Those travelling with children or in several generations can combine nature observation, exercise and history in different daily itineraries here.
