Nordenhuse on the Great Belt: History, Beach and Forest

Nordenhuse combines the history of an old fishing settlement with beaches on the Great Belt, a cycling stage and Præsteskoven forest. Nordenhuse is one of the fishing settlements along the coast of the Great Belt whose history dates back to the 16th century. The first known mention dates from 1579, under the name Agetved. From 1664, the fishing colony was known as Nørre Fiskerhusene. This history of the name also makes the place interesting for visitors who would like to combine a coastal holiday with an insight into the development of local settlements.

Præsteskoven Beach is also one of the area’s possible swimming destinations. The coast has been protected since 1959 and includes access to the beach for swimming during the summer months. This means that, in addition to historical points of interest, Nordenhuse also offers concrete ideas for warm days on the Great Belt. Præsteskoven: Walks among old trees

The Præsteskoven forest near Nordenhuse covers approximately 11.0 hectares. Among the trees growing there are beech, ash and maple, as well as some stands of conifers. The forest lies directly on the Great Belt and is suitable for walks. The walking trail passes an old forester’s house and the oldest beech trees in the forest, which are approximately 150 years old.

This creates a clear contrast with the beach when planning your day: instead of sand and water, the forest focuses on a landscape of different tree species, forestry history and a location by the shore. Depending on the weather and their interests, families can choose between these different nature experiences without limiting their stay to exclusively sporting activities.

Cycling stage and fishing spot

The 34 km cycling stage of the Herregårdsruten Kerteminde–Nyborg offers Nordenhuse as an opportunity for a swimming break. The stage runs along paved roads unless you take the detour into the forest at Lundsgaard Gods. For your planning, it is therefore important to decide whether you want to follow the stage or include the forest section as an alternative.

At the Nordenhuse fishing hotspot, a sandy coast with sandbanks awaits. Fishing there is particularly worthwhile at high tide; the fishing spot can be especially productive from February to early April. Anyone planning a trip outside the summer months can take this seasonal focus into account when choosing accommodation and travel dates. Nordenhuse also has a small bicycle station in the car park by Præsteskoven forest. It is used for inflating tyres, adjusting and tightening bicycle components, and carrying out other simple repairs.
