The loosely laid-out, gently curving village street is defined by farms and houses along the course of the road. A special viewpoint is located on the 29-metre-high Galgebakken. From its summit, the view extends far across the surrounding area. Helnæs Made is also notable for its animal and plant life: lapwings, oystercatchers, redshanks and snipes breed there. The protected early purple orchid can also be found on Helnæs Made. On Bobakkerne and Halen, species-rich dry grassland flora thrives thanks to grazing that has taken place without artificial fertiliser since time immemorial.

From Halen to Helnæs Lighthouse

At the northern tip of Helnæs, Halen forms a long, elevated ridge that is now completely untouched. The ridge was formed during the Ice Age and adds a geological perspective on the landscape to the nature experiences. At the end of Lindehovedvej, there is a car park and a public toilet near Helnæs Lighthouse. From there, a path leads down to the stony coast. Another path follows the cliff edge northwards to the beach at Helnæs Made.

Those planning a group trip with different preferences can alternate between these options: a short marked trail, a viewpoint, nature observation or a detour to the coast. The flat terrain on Maden enables people with reduced mobility to use the gravel path “Overdrevet” and the coastal beach meadow.

Local history, art and local impressions

Helnæs By itself also deserves attention. It is believed that the village was established during the transitional period between the Viking Age and the Middle Ages, around 1100 and thereafter. Helnæs Church was consecrated in 1618 and expanded in 1694. It stands on a hill overlooking Helnæs Made. In this way, the history of the village is connected with a tangible impression of the landscape.

Art enthusiasts can find different points of interest at Galleri Langager and Galleri Knadring. Galleri Langager is located in the old dairy on Helnæs and presents changing exhibitions by various Danish artists. The gallery also offers events with creative activities for children and adults. Galleri Knadring displays art collected over many years, including a significant Bornholm collection and an extensive NASA image gallery. Helnæs Mill has now been converted into a nature and leisure centre. At Spisestedet AKS, potatoes from Helnæs are a staple ingredient in the dishes.

Getting there and finding suitable accommodation

Helnæs can be reached from Funen by car or bicycle via the Langøre causeway. A local bus runs from Assens to Helnæs. For cycling trips, it is important to note that there are no cycle paths on Helnæs. A marked cycle route runs from Assens to Helnæs and is approximately 47 kilometres long. When choosing holiday accommodation, you should therefore consider whether your plans are mainly focused on walks, culture, travelling without your own car or a longer cycling tour.
