České Budějovice 7: Vacation Apartments and Holiday Homes

Přemysl Otakar II Square covers more than one hectare and is one of the largest square town squares in the Czech Republic. From this urban scale, České Budějovice offers a range extending to historic religious buildings, museums, galleries, markets, and paths along the Vltava.

Cityscape and History

The Black Tower has an observation platform 46 meters above the ground, accessible via 225 mostly wooden steps. St. Nicholas Cathedral was built in the 13th century as the parish church of the royal city of České Budějovice. After the Diocese of České Budějovice was founded, the church was elevated to cathedral status and became the first and principal church of the entire diocese.

The former Dominican monastery with the Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary is one of the oldest and most valuable historic monuments in České Budějovice. The Wortner House is a restored Gothic-Renaissance building on U Černé věže Street. Since 1993, it has housed a branch of the Alšova jihočeská galerie; the Wortner House also hosts temporary exhibition projects by the gallery.

Museums and Science

The “Story of the City” exhibition at the South Bohemian Museum presents artifacts documenting the history of České Budějovice since the city was founded. In its exhibitions, the South Bohemian Museum also documents the history, culture, folk art, and nature of the South Bohemian region. A permanent natural history, archaeological, and ethnographic exhibition is located on the second floor of the historic museum building and covers 730 square meters.

The České Budějovice Observatory and Planetarium conducts astronomical research and introduces the general public to astronomy and related sciences.

Markets and Brewing Culture

The markets on Piarist Square take place year-round on Thursdays and Saturdays. The market offers agricultural products, fruit, vegetables, baked goods, honey, preserved foods, meat and sausage products, dairy products, as well as handicrafts and arts and crafts made by local producers.

The visitor center of the Budějovický Budvar brewery includes the multimedia exhibition “The Story of Budějovice Beer,” which presents the history of brewing in České Budějovice.

Nature and Trails

Stromovka Park is the largest park in České Budějovice and covers 68 hectares. It has paved and unpaved paths used by cyclists and inline skaters.

Cycle Route 12 runs north to south along the Vltava and is part of an international cycle route that passes through the urban area from Germany to Austria. The Vltava Trail offers a 98-kilometer water route from the Lanna Shipyard in České Budějovice via Hluboká nad Vltavou and Týn nad Vltavou to Koloděje nad Lužnicí. In addition, the Vltava Trail includes 60 kilometers of well-maintained paths along the Vltava for cycling, inline skating, and walking.
